The smoke around the tower/dreadnought looks kind of like fingers. Β Sinister piece.

The city watched in horror as the S.S. Andromeda crashed into the distance, filling the sky with fire and smoke as black as death. My little sister shivered and cried at my side, her hands gripping my clothes tightly. I put an arm around her, forcing myself to not shake, trying not to let the heavy silence get to me. There were hundreds of people around us...yet all I could hear was the sound of the wind.

Something that big shouldn't explode on impact.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 4

Rahjital In reply to FalconBoy [2014-08-01 07:47:18 +0000 UTC]

Quite on the contrary, something that big should explode on impact.Β  A small fighter does not have enough kinetic energy to explode without its fuel (at least not when not moving at several times the speed of sound), but such a massive ship would have a huge amount of energy even if it moved rather slow because of its sheer momentum. It's the same with meteorites, they don't carry any fuel and yet when they explode they can do damage over hundreds of kilometres. Just ask the Russians, they have plenty of experience with it

SDA-MessengersOracle In reply to FalconBoy [2014-08-01 03:20:54 +0000 UTC]

Ooo! Ooo! It could if it was shot down and already on fire before impact. Besides, no one knows how the ship is built, perhaps in certain circumstances it might explode, especially considering the technology probably has different variables than what we might assume. You have a good point, but I bet there'll always be an exception to the rule.

RafalDorsz In reply to FalconBoy [2014-08-01 02:56:51 +0000 UTC]

Doesn't everything explode on impact if it has enough energy? And I don't mean fuel-explode, I mean vapourized-metal-explode

FalconBoy In reply to ToddNTheShiningSword [2014-08-01 00:31:17 +0000 UTC]

I know small craft (fighters, passenger aircraft) MIGHT if they're running on fumes but mostly this Does Not Happen.

Thanks. I guess spaceships could be different in the future though.

FalconBoy In reply to ToddNTheShiningSword [2014-08-01 02:54:17 +0000 UTC]

Generally you don't want to fly something that is so easily combustible that the slightest impact will have it going up.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ToddNTheShiningSword In reply to FalconBoy [2014-08-01 02:59:04 +0000 UTC]

That's good thinking they don't use enough in sci-fi, I guess. It makes for cooler art though!

Came here from the dailies section and then went on to view most of your gallery here. You have a new fan.

I've been trying to find the words to articulate how this image affects me. I had almost given up... was about to link away, when it struck me:

Dec. 7th, 1941.

This image has the same effect on me as images of the Arizona burning, right after the big explosion that killed the ship.

Your work is very enjoyable.

Amazing pic!

I always have trouble depicting cloud and smoke realistically.

Marvellous.

I don't envy the emergency services putting that fire out though.
