Description
Another watercolour painting down for practice. This one is of the cheliped (or claw) of the Atlantic blue crab (Callinectes sapidus). Trying out different textures and colours.ΒFeeling confident enough to start the big piece already!
Winsor & Newton watercolour and Neef sable brushes on A5 Arches hotpress paper (300 gsm) | App. 3.5 hours.

Very good likeness. The coloration is very accurate, even with the faint presence of green on the dorsal side. The only critique I can give is that it needs to be a little more elongated, but not as long as the chelae found on the Portunus species I commented on before.

Yeah Portunus definitely have longer chelae so I do agree. I was referencing this photo here: www.aqua.org/~/media/Images/Anβ¦
It seems the angle of the photo fore-shortened every thing a bit.

Yeah, I looked at the picture and agree. It would be a pretty good challenge to vary the detail and sharpness to give the impression that the claw is slightly angled toward the viewer.
