Description Special Operations Shock Trooper

The S.O.S.T. are an elite special operations unit in the Sol Defense Force Marine Corps that is adapted to combat operations that normal Marines can‘t handle. They are commanded by the NavySpecWar and Marine Corps Special Operations Command. They serve as shock infantry that specialize in rapid and heavy assault scenarios and carry out covert operations. SOSTs are inserted into the battlefield via Hammerhead Dropships or can alternatively be dropped into combat zones from low orbit via EDPs (Exo-atmospheric Drop Pods), one-man pods designed to carry soldiers to their drop point. This unique delivery method makes them less susceptible to enemy ground-to-air defenses than the Hammerhead Dropships that conventional Marines use. Once at their destination, SOSTs move quickly to regroup, secure a perimeter, and treat the less fortunate of their ranks. Since SOST units usually “travel light“, they are the “first to fight“.

The SOSTs were formed in 2320 during the Coalition invasion, in order to end rebel incursions, allowing the SDF to focus most of their attention on the Coalition threat. So far SOST units have been successful in quelling Seditionist forces, but probably the most well known SOST unit is NSW1-SOST Omega Squad, nicknamed “Angels” or Angel Squad (partly because “NSWT1-SOST Omega Squad” is too hard to use in conversation and it is also Omega Squad, especially their squad leader Sergeant Major Natsume Tokima, that is responsible for saving thousands, if not millions, of lives countless times. Whenever they appear on the battlefield some soldiers believe that God has sent his angels to watch over them). Angel Squad’s personal motto is “Angels Fall First”, meaning that if anyone is going to fall in battle to make sure everyone else gets out in one piece it’s going to be them.

SOST units wear a special uniform to distinguish them from other Marines and Army forces. Instead of the standard green (although Marine and SOST forces alike use different camouflage to blend in with different environments), they are clad in black, gray, and urban camouflage, with a helmet that includes a very distinct faceplate (which includes advance internal components and electronic aid hardwired into the helmet). Their armor plating is lighter, but more resilient, allowing SOSTs to maneuver quickly and with ease. This makes them instantly recognizable as elite troops. Also, due to the huge risk of their job and the superiority of their training, the SOSTs are proud and have a very “gung-ho” attitude.

he looks too much like a spartan, the gun looks too much like the MA5C assault rifle, and the design is obviously halo. I don't know who you said this is (c) of, but I don't believe any professional studio would try something that looks exactly like another video game.

However, artistically you did a nice job with the drawing, his left arm could be angled a little better, but you did a good job with the legs and chest, you also might want to make the visor on the helmet less curved though.

Well that's why I put it up here for feedback; to see what needs to be changed.

yeah, well im not criticizing your drawing, only the company that thought they could get away with that. i mean, you did do a good job on it.

I am one of the Co-founders and a conceptual artist of said company. I put up concept art for our projects to get feedback from a broader audience. I appreciate your criticism and some of the things you pointed out for this piece have gone through changes for this is just an older concept. Most people, however, fail to point out the details that need to be changed; they just say "oh, this looks like Halo."

We, in no way, wish to rip off anyone. We just want people, like you, to provide constructive feedback/criticism so we can make changes to our work. We appreciate that. We just don't appreciate the "oh, this looks like Halo" thing, because that doesn't give us anything to work with.

you really should be able to tell the difference then, I shouldn't need to say it's the angular patterns on the armor, and the fact that the armor itself is bulky like that of halo, and the armor segments look exactly alike, almost as if no imagination was put into it. it's the whole generic style, and if you make it look or remind anyone of halo, then there's your problem. Unfortunately that game will far overshadow yours unless you can get it that popular.

if you really want my opinions, then the best thing I can say is that you need to spend some more time to make it feel more unique, and not copy the design so much. Sorry if it sounds harsh, but that's what it comes down to...

I wish you luck though, and I hope it takes off well.

I saw your Fitzgerald guy on the front page, so I decided to take a look through your gallery - and you're very good at doing these detailed armor O: I wish I had your skills xD Most of my body armor look failtastic.

Also, while not looking completely like Halo, it's very reminiscent of the game (which I haven't played, but I've drawn Chief many times).
It's difficult to change the placement of the armor because some places are so basic (chestplate, shoulders, etc.) but might I suggest that you change the overall shape of the armour, instead of the details? Because while people may focus on the details, they only remember the overall big shape of the body.

Alternately you can try inking and colouring O:

First of all, I just wanna say he looks awesome. The armour is well detailed and the anatomy is nice and proportional. You're a great artist, and this is a great piece of work.

Here comes the hard part.

Unfortunately, I have to admit that it does look a little too similar to an ODST from Halo. Even with your many changes in the smaller details, most people (like that guy who commented above) aren't really gonna see those, they'll just see an ODST or something of a knockoff.

Looking at other people's creations to inspire yourself is great, but you gotta be careful that you don't make it too similar to whatever it is that you're getting your inspiration from. I know it can be difficult, because you're worried that if you change it too much you'll lose the coolness or whatever characteristic(s) you love from the original.

It's the same sort of thing with Natsume looking similar to Sakaki.

Believe me, I've had this problem myself. It can be difficult being original sometimes. The best thing to do is to keep trying, to just put your imagination on overdrive and to come up with as many concepts as you can. Sometimes the weirdest craziest stuff from the most obscure pit in your mind can turn out to be really awesome and original when you focus it and refine it.

I know it's not always easy hearing this sort of thing... But I say it because I believe in you and your potential to be more creative.

Never give up my friend, you have a great future ahead of you.

Although I agree with that I have to be careful with how much inspiration I use, I have to disagree with you that the SOSTs look too similar to ODSTs. I compared the two and they're appearance were completely different. Just because they both have body armor, doesn't mean they're practically identical.

However, I appreciate your input in the matter. It does help.

It's mainly in the helmet where I see it... What colour is the visor, if I might ask?

Renegade01 In reply to zwimmy [2009-08-27 23:52:33 +0000 UTC]

Multiple. You can swap them out with a red, yellow, orange, or black visor.

Spork
Oriented
Sauce
Trooper
SOST's specialize in destroying their enemies with Energy Sporks.
We don't know what precisely the reasoning behind having sauce in their name is, but we assume it is because they Have Sauce from the mystical origin of rules 1 and 2.

Good pic btw, looks kewl

It is very similar to halo but it very unique. No matter. It is very awesome. You are very talented. Is that a FAMAS he is using? I assume he, though it may be a female...

The weapon he's using is based off of the AUG design, although it is FAMAS inspired.
