Description Not a simple resize, not really a redesign either, This is more a style change.
For this 2nd try at making a larger custom RPG-like sprite. (the first being this old solider sprite) I took another generic unit from Fire Emblem, the archer.

According to the CC plugin of Paint.net, the Color Count of the new sprite is 15+BG. Even if I am far from having a "new style" yet I already won on that point, as the color count usualy kill me. At first the sprite was 22+BG, so I had to play a lot on the palette to remove these colors.

Conserning the shape/proportion I did not got too far from the original, as I try to understand the shapes and shadows for now. Dealing with a larger style when you're used to small sprites is not easy, so, one step at a time. However, I used the reference sprite as color-zones shape like if it was a WIP, so the new one is 100% drawn. The fact to only following an hazy reference made me focus more on shapes than if I follow a resized "finished" sprite. KT sprites were also used as reference or proportion.

It still need to be polished, but I'll try to animate it later this week as visual test. After all, the archer is not the hardest unit to animate. When I will have trouble, it's to animate the swordmaster closer to KT style.

Like always, feedback and advices are welcome in the comment section.

Ooh, you made Dorothy look pretty, which, in my opinion, is not an easy feat

The style change is quite fantastic, just change the shading on the hair. Thats the only problem I can see. Maybe add a ribbon or something in the hair? It looks kinda plain. And maybe you could add some arrows to the pouch. It still looks amazing though. Do you plan to do this for all your sprites? It would make it so awesome!

Thanks again for the instant comment, I don't feel stalked at all.. xD

So, all my sprites ?
Even using a reference it took me around 5h for this single and quite simple sprite, so, the answer is not for now. It would take weeks or months per animations, what is not really productive unless if I'm sure to use the sprite in a project. I'm training to this new style (still not looking like I want it to) and to get faster at spriting, so, when I'll be able to sprite better in this style than in smaller style, yes, but not before.

I'm not ready to run, let me learn how to walk first. I lose a great half of the worktime because of tests and re-tests since I don't have a good reading of the shadings. Shapes, it really depends on the pose, but I'm still too slow. But yeah, the style I intend to make is close to this size, the characters are around 64px high (72 in this one) instead of 32, and should have more details when I'll be confident enough to draw them (and when the colour count will stop to kill me for 1h when I finish the sprite base).

As for the details you talk about, it is the same generic unit so it don't get any, but you're right about it. The larger size allow to add more details and do real haircut changes for the playable characters and bosses (or even diferent default characters). It can be interesting to compare a cast resprited where we can identify the character on the battle form. And for the arrows, remember the original animation, you don't see them on all frames, but don't worry I'll not forget them when I'll animate this one to test the style.

So yes it's official, I'm stopping pure FE style (exept for collabs and comissions) to focus on more serious training about 100% custom. I still use references for now, but already redraw from scratch instead of simply editing...It's a start

I hope your project goes well too, I seen a lot of donnation pools lately. ^^"
