Description "Gwindor Reborn"
Completed: August 18th, 2007

Gwindor, for those unfamiliar with the character, is an elf from the First Age in Tolkien's world of Middle-earth (as described in the Silmarillion and The Children of Hurin).

Gwindor's life is a complicated one which I will try to summarize in a couple paragraphs...

He was born in Nargothrond, a secret dwelling in south-western Beleriand. He rashly rushed into battle during the Nirnaeth Arnoediad (The Battle of Unnumbered Tears) after seeing his brother tormented and put to death by the enemy. Gwindor was then captured by Morgoth (the original Dark Lord).

Seventeen years later, Gwindor escaped from Angband, having procured a sword from a slave working in the smiths of Thangorodrim. During the fray, he lost his left hand. He was so tortured during his stay in Angband that the elves of Nargothrond barely recognized him upon his return.

He brought with him Túrin, son of Húrin, another tragic character depicted in the Silmarillion and other texts. To make a long story short, Gwindor's betrothed, the elf-princess Finduilas, falls in love with Túrin (a mortal man)... Túrin persuades the ruler and lords of Nargothrond to abandon their secrecy and face Morgoth in open battle against the warnings of Gwindor. The city is subsequently lost to the enemy and Gwindor dies practically in Túrin's arms, beseeching him to save Finduilas, who ends up dying pinned to a tree by orcs.

One word: Tragic.

So this drawing is a representation of Gwindor after he is reborn from the Halls of Mandos (as most, if not all, elves eventually are). I made this as a sort of illustration for my role-playing of his character on LiveJournal. The main point was to show Gwindor reflecting over his former life, in which he had lost his left hand. I wanted a sort of lost expression, neither happy nor sad... but introspective.

I will probably do another piece featuring Gwindor relatively soon, as I think there is a true shortage of art with him in it... the fate of a minor character, I suppose.

I like the shirt Gwindor is wearing. I'd like to own a shirt like that. lol *pawns Gwindor's shirt and runs away* lol j/k You did a really good job with the shading. I like how Gwindor is holding his hand and the position he's sitting in. He looks like he's contemplating things. ^_^

Thanks for all the compliments! *hugs* Yes, I want a shirt like his too... *grabs shirt back from you and runs away giggling*

I had a tough time deciding which clothing items would be dark and which light... tried a couple different things and it ended up like that out of coincidence. *laughs* I also tried a couple other positions with the pose while I took the template pictures of myself. ("I'm a model!"... yeah right ^_-)

Glad you likey! And glad the pose got the emotion across! ^_^

Interesting character. Why do elves always have the prettiest hair? I love the pose and shading. Makes me wanna take some time and shade one of my drawings.

*laughs* Shading used to really unnerve me! I had the most horrible time getting things right that I just did line drawings more often than not. But once I finally got the hang of it, shading became second nature... and now it's difficult for me to draw WITHOUT shading! XD The drawings I do that I plan to color are difficult for that very reason. I always want to shade them, even though I'll have to erase that to color over it.

Elves have pretty hair because I MAKES 'EM HAVE PRETTY HAIR! *snickers* Though I plan to draw Gwindor from a time after his captivity... and then he won't be so pretty. Tolkien even rights that his own people can't recognize him and think he's one of the aged of mortal men upon his return from Angband. So methinks his hair won't be nearly as pretty in that drawing. ^_-

Glad you like the pose! I modelled for it myself. See picture in scraps: [link]

Wow... this ended up MUCH longer a response than I intended!

I had a shading phase in my artwork after taking still-life drawing classes. Then I got lazy, haha.
Interesting, keep up the cool shaded drawings.
Awesome how you model for your drawings, I rarely do that with my pics but I should so they can look more natural.

Yeah... I figure if I can get into the position myself, it's nice to have some sort of reference for a pose. It's easier than trying to find a photo on the Internet which fits what you're thinking of drawing, y'know?

*snickers about you getting lazy*
