From these angles I can't see where the candles access to oxygen how do you prevent the candle going out?

They don't melt from the candle heat?

No, no danger of that. The candle is in a glass votive holder, and that is held securely in the sculpture about 2 1/2 inches away from the eyes.If you design something like this, use a glass candle holder inside the sculpture, and be sure nothing overhangs the candle area.

We buy glass eyes and paint them ourselves, but you can get eyes like these from Van Dyke's taxidermy supply. They are the bird eyes called "wood carver eyes" [link]

If you want eyes that aren't glass, there are places that make gorgeous acrylic eyes. Look at these! [link]

I could imagine a very angry cat growling noise. He looks particularly evil for a kitty bat.

That's really interesting, is the votive inserted in the back or the head or something? You really can't tell from the front or profile, which is pretty cool in itself. I love it when characters have a definite sound to them (I have a snowshoe who looks and acts like a duchess but sounds like a firetruck being put through a wood chipper when she's mad)

Here is a pic of the way the votive candle fits in . You can't see it from the front at all. [link]
