Done for a contest over at RatDaddyFC I took one look at the theme of Splinter with one or more of his sons and I was immediately off to go look for a pose reference! In the end, I cobbled together three different photos. (Work in progress photo that shows my lovely Photoshop skills over on Facebook: www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbi… )

I'm once again playing with mixing my digital and traditional elements! The figures in the image were drawn in pencil, scanned, the line art darkened and touched up on the computer, printed out, colored with Prisma markers, scanned again, then shaded digitally, and finally, put onto a background that I transplanted from elsewhere.

Let's talk about that background! That sucker was Photoshopped in there, it's from an old painting I did in college - a painting that has not graced my gallery because I hate the bloody thing. It was supposed to be an image of a staircase with a figure looming in the doorway at the end. Problem was that I got all the way to the final day of class when we were sealing all of our canvases before I looked at the thing and realized that I'd somehow forgotten how to draw stairs in perspective, as each one of them was the exact same height as the one before it, rather than getting smaller as they got further away. Well, that's nothing that Photoshop can't fix! The 'stairs' in the old image have become the ceiling in this one, and the walls are the dark paint wash that made up the majority of the painting, just digitally altered to be a nicer color to fit with this image. Put in a floor made from another section of the painting, edit the doorway to be empty, and BOOM! You see, THIS is why I never throw anything away.

I think I may use this image for prints for our first ever Artist's Alley at Albuquerque Comic Expo this June!

A few people have told me they saw a similar image somewhere, and I finally found it! Artist Andry "Shango" Rajoelina does whole series of "super families" as a photo of them from the back and they are ADORABLE! It looks like he and I started our images around the same time even! I think it's awesome how the universe works that way. You can see his awesome series in the following links:
