A) I try to learn by examining art from artists who are better than it than I am. [link]
B) If I see a pose or posture in a photograph or movie or cartoon that I like, I'll try to get a screencap or saved image of it to refer to when I get a chance to draw. For example, I have a folder of saved screenshots and cropped images just of ponies from the show sitting down.
C) I usually start with something of a stickfigure guideline (Some call it a 'skeleton') to get a rough sense of position and proportion, then I draw the rest of the character over that. Sometimes I erase the guidelines later. [link] Sometimes I don't. [link]
Part of the reason for that is if I don't like how the stick version is coming out, it's a lot easier to fix it or start over from just a few seconds or minutes of making a rough guide then than to try to fix it or start over after spending an hour adding more to it.
D) Get lucky. There's a bit of luck involved in all the stuff I draw. If it doesn't work out, I just start over or draw something else.

You're welcome. : )
I just stumbled across this discussion on using reference images earlier. Maybe it'll be helpful? [link]
