Katya has high-functioning autism, and she often acts in ways that seem irrational if you don’t understand her worldview. Change and unpredictability make her feel extremely insecure, and she’s highly sensitive in hearing and touch. As such, the world at large proves quite nerve-wracking to her, full of over-stimulating sensations, noises, and, of course, completely and utterly unpredictable. Katya copes by filling her life with structure and routine. She gets up and goes to bed at the same times every day, she tends to eat the same meals, she takes the same route to school every day. These things give her sense of stability, of being “grounded.”
Katya also has difficulty in social settings. She doesn’t understand nonverbal communication and has difficulty understanding nonliteral language. She also is absolutely unable to lie convincingly, even about small things.
  Another thing that makes Katya comfortable is nature and animals. She likes to garden, bird-watch, and bug-watch. She loves trees especially. Nature is not only very predictable compared to people, but also exceedingly beautiful and, in her experience, gentle.
History:

     Katya was quirky ever since she was young, but she didn’t have too much trouble at school with bullies. She did, nevertheless, have trouble making friends, because she has a tendency to panic when people violate her routines. As Katya has a lot of routines, this is an easy thing to do, even without trying. Katya is also afraid of being laughed at, and she has trouble figuring out when someone is laughing because they like her and think she’s funny, or when they’re laughing at her for being unusual. This makes her slow to trust people.

     At a young age, Katya’s parents were killed in a car crash. Although at the time she felt as if her entire world had crumbled at her feet, as any child would, she coped remarkably well by depending on the constants in her life and sticking religiously to her routines. However, her therapist and her foster family both began to think that she was unhealthily dependent on the familiar and those who coddled her insecurities. They eventually decided that they would send her to a boarding school for high school, so she would be forced to learn to function independently in the world, but before she was expected to be a fully functioning adult.

The boy was cute, Katya decided, after a long period of contemplation. His rumpled hair and sheepish smile were very aesthetic, but what she loved most was the way his hands worked so gently and carefully to braid another girl's hair. His friend? His petite amie? Katya continued to be so mesmerized by the boy's hands as he transformed the girl's head from a tangled mess to a glossy woven gold that, when the deed was done and his hands stopped moving, she felt suddenly disappointed. The boy and the girl exchanged a few words, smiled and waved at each other, before the girl put her nose in a book and the boy walked away with a slight bounce in his step. Sudden panic raced through Katya. He was getting away! She darted forth from her hiding spot in the shadow of a tree and followed him, changing from shadow to shadow. At last, he turned around. She froze, pressing herself against a sturdy oak.
"You've been following me for some time," the boy said, smiling with a baffled expression on his face. "Can I help you?" he asked. Katya clapped her hands to her mouth, staring at the boy with wide eyes. At last, she stammered, "c-Could you teach me? t-To braid hair like that." The boy laughed. "Is that all?" he said, "Here, let me show you; it's pretty simple."
