Nigel Spire was a spindly kid, always picked on for being a bit "weird". He vowed that he would be someone some day and read up on how to gain the power to do just that. He became the world's foremost researcher of the occult, and went on to become the world's Majesty Mage (much to the chagrin of others, such as Doc Gothic and the maniacal Matthias Thornn). He served as a hero in this stead for years, inspiring others to follow in his footsteps, teaching courses, and lecturing at the local university (where he gained the "Professor" moniker, as there was no Doctorate of Occultism available).

One fateful day, when meditating at his Sanctum Spire, a long, calculated, sinister plan was set afoot, and the powerful demon Thanaton was unleashed upon the world. The Professor, of course, used all of his impressive magical might to combat the threat, it wasn't enough, and he was slain. In truth, for reasons unbeknownst to himself, Nigel was intended to win, but Thanaton broke ranks, went against orders, and continued his reign of terror and destruction. Spire would indeed return, in a different identity, to defeat Thanaton, but that is another story...
