Description Cliffords Tower York
Stunning building with a terrible history
[link]

The Tower stands on the site of a horrific massacre of York's Jewish population in 1190. A large group had taken refuge from a violent mob in the then wooden tower. Rather than perish at the hands of the mob that awaited them outside, many of the Jews took their own lives, others died in the flames, and those who finally surrendered were murdered.

Today, Clifford's Tower stands as a potent reminder of religious and racial intolerance - an educative force in an unstable world.

Seeing this has brought back a memory or two from childhood. Stopped off in York on the way to a residential school trip in Whitby when I was 11 years old. I took a similar photo of this building with my compact (I was using film back then). The Building had an evil looking sky behind it at the time. I have no idea where the photo is now unfortunately

good shot of a difficult building to shoot.
we were there in winter with drab uninteresting skies and nowhere to park.

Thank you "Park n Ride" is the only way to go in York its too old and too narrow....the rusty looking stones are said to be "the Blood of the jews who were massacred there in 1190"..although in reality this tower wasnt built then
