Description "Morgoth took Maedhros and hung him from the face of a precipice upon Thangorodrim, and he was caught to the rock by the wrist of his right hand in a band of steel... Then Fingon the valiant, son of Fingolfin...climbed to the foot of the precipice where his kinsman hung, and then could go no further; and he wept when he saw the cruel device of Morgoth. Maedhros therefore, being in anguish without hope, begged Fingon to shoot him with his bow; and Fingon strung an arrow, and bent his bow. And seeing no better hope he cried to Manwë, saying:
'O King to whom all birds are dear, speed now this feathered shaft, and recall some pity for the Noldor in their need!'
His prayer was answered swiftly. For Manwë to whom all birds are dear, and to whom they bring news upon Taniquetil from Middle-earth, had sent Thorondor, King of Eagles, mightiest of all birds that have ever been, whose outstretched wings spanned thirty fathoms; and staying Fingon's hand he took him up, and bore him to the face of the rock where Maedhros hung. But Fingon could not release the hell-wrought bond upon his wrist, nor sever it, nor draw it from the stone. Again therefore in his pain Maedhros begged that he would slay him; but Fingon cut off his hand above the wrist, and Thorondor bore them back to Mithrim."
chapter 7 The Silmarillion.

I forgot about this scene, but with this artwork it is just heartbreaking, even with the power of Thorondor. His wings look like they protect Maedhros. <3

Hi - You nailed this! That might be the best pic of a Tolkienian eagle I've seen.

I used this for a post on this chapter in The Silmarillion: truemyths.org/2015/01/09/the-s…

Hope that's cool!

This is my fave moment in Silm. And the art shows it right. i came upon the picture with a long conversation beneath it: people mixed the scene with Promethius.

Hello, I really like this artwork, and I'd love to see it on Wikipedia to illustrate the articles about Maedhros, Fingon andd Manwë

However, on Wikipedia we only use images using a free licence, which permits commercial use. Would you be kind enough to change your deviations' licence to drop the "NC" clause ?

Thanks!

YES! When I searched DA with "Maedhros" I thought, "Gee, I hope someone has made an epic artwork of him hanging on the mountain and Fingon coming to the rescue with the Eagle". People like you make the internet a better place!

Everytime I see this I just love it a little more. It is absolutely magnificent and makes me weep bitter tears of desperation that I will never make such beautiful art every time. I've seen many an attempt at drawing this particular scene and yours is my far the most brilliant, succesful and accurate. Thank you so much for sharing this <3

This is great!
I'm just ranting, and I don't know the context but they should've driven a huge nail in the rock so that Maedhros could rest his feet on it, then he should've warmly clothed him, and given him just enough food for his survival until he was thin enough to slip his wrist through the steel band... but if the chain couldn't but severed,I guess it was also going to shrink as Maedhros got thinner.

Really cool! I've also thought of making the Eagles look less like any real existing type of bird, but instead more fantastical and unbelievable.

The otherworldiness of Thorondor adds greatly to this image, setting it apart from the many other versions of this scenario; fine as they may be. You also manage to convey the inherent danger posed by this deed; one senses that a false move might result in a deadly plummet for either elf...

Hehe, great. I figured instead if picturing a "magic carpet" style eagle, floating there..I'm a climber... I've been on walls... I'm going to try an attempt at how we could would really do it. (if we had a sesame street colored bird...)

Rabidus-Lepus In reply to rinthcog [2011-08-24 01:46:28 +0000 UTC]

It turned out great! And I see no reason that Thorondor and his ilk of giant, flying eagles couldn't have a minor climbing skill!
