I want to pet it.

What brush shapes do you use to get such a nice, weighty, oil-painterly appearance to your stuff? I just keep staring at the flame and embers trying to think if my Photoshop even has brushes that can do that, or if it can even load ones that do (since it's ancient).

Brush set not compatible with my version of Photoshop. :cĀ  Weh, hahaha. What I get for still using Photoshop 7, haha.Ā  I don't use Photoshop for much, usually just touching up, nothing that's ever warranted upgrading. But thank you so much! If I ever upgrade to a better version (maybe if that one 'free' version of CS that was up is still up...), I'll be sure to have this on-hand to try out!

aw bummer! but no problem. you use sai?

well hey, if you use windows you *might* be able to use this program to convert brushes! www.texturemate.com/abrMate

to try and answer your question sans brushes, to get the 'painterly look' i use lots of oddly shaped brushes which have interesting textures and i usually go from dark to light.

Oh, abrMate worked like a charm! Also, wow, playing with these is really trippy and some of these are really fun.Ā  I remember back when I was using an old tower, I had a TON of weird brushes that I loved to mess with, but they were never this dynamic; I usually just used them to texture things here and there. Gosh, these are so fun. Thank you!

Also, I don't have Sai, as I have thing against pirating software, I don't have the money to spend on it, and I don't want to use the demo only to get attached.Ā  Maybe when I get a job I'll invest in it because Sai looks like a lot of fun.

I'm not sure what I'd do with these right off the bat, as I'm still in a bit of an art funk, but this will definitely help later should I figure out how to use them.Ā  Also, I prefer coloring from dark to light, as well. Ā Ā  Well, usually. Actually it depends on what I'm doing, but when it's more painterly stuff, then yeah, dark to light. With some added shadows and detailing after. It just feels better that way.
