Why are people so concerned about art theft?

TreeHugger28 In reply to NiklasWalendy [2011-11-13 22:03:49 +0000 UTC]
Because when someones art is stolen, its like taking a little bit of their identity, they put there heart into a piece now someone else claims it as their own!

You do understand the concept of digital content, right? Copying digital content is done without the original product losing anything. People can claim my stuff as their own, but regardless of whether they do that or not, it will still be mine. How do I know that so certainly? Well, think about it this way:
Imagine your art was 'stolen'(as you call it) without you knowing it. Do you feel any loss? Is your work any less yours? No, it isn't.
If you knew about it, the situation would be different, I realize that. However, the same thing applies still, it's still yours and it is still you who made it. If you feel like it isn't, then that's a problem of your perception not of the actual situation.

Yea, I am not saying its a physical loss, but an emotional one. Some one else getting credit for something you did and that you are truly passionate about sucks and it hurts and its depressing. They are taking credit for something that they put nothing into. Obviously ignorance is bliss in this case, but the persons gonna find out that someone took their work eventually.

I'll leave it at that. I realise that this is how many people are thinking. Just one more question: Do you illegally copy/download music? How does that make you feel?

I don't download personally. But I think its kind of a different issue, just because one is about money and the other one isn't. So I don't have strong feelings either way.

Because people have been selling other people's art for profit, which is downright wrong.

It's all about money nowadays, isn't it?
I don't want to make any money with my art, if someone else made any money with my art - that's a win-win, is it not?
The problem with people nowadays is that they think that one man's gain is another man's loss.
They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, wouldn't that apply here too?

Using another artist's work for inspiration? That's flattery.
Stealing another artist's work and taking credit for it? That's wrong.
Stealing someone's artwork IS a loss for the artist, because they put a lot of time and care and their feelings into their work, and for someone to steal it so that they can get the attention for it isn't right.

"Stealing someone's artwork IS a loss for the artist, because they put a lot of time and care and their feelings into their work, and for someone to steal it so that they can get the attention for it isn't right."
Logical fallacy?
"It's a loss for person a because it's not right."
"It's a loss for person a because he put effort into it."
How do either of them make any sense?
Art and creativity, as far as I'm concerned, is about venting your energy into a certain channel and creating something with it. In the sense of:
I listened to a song and it made me feel a certain way and to capture this feeling I made a short movie to satisfy my need to vent this feeling.
I had a need for this and I satisfied it. By creation. By production. It has nothing to do with money, with credit, with reputation or with copyright.
All these things come afterwards and have very little to do with the work as is.

I honestly can't believe you are trying to justify stealing art. It's wrong and you know it.
Oh, so you can steal my art? Okay, then you can steal my TV and car and wallet and jewelry too. Because my artwork is just as much a private possession of mine as those things are. Your right. For most people art is an expression of feeling, and money doesn't matter. But for someone to steal someone else's art is an insult to their feelings. It's like saying "I don't care if you put your heart and soul into this. I'm going to stomp all over your feelings by taking this and pretending it's mine."

First of all you're entirely ignoring the fact I pointed out your logical fallacies. Then you go on comparing digital content with physical objects. A car, a wallet, a TV nor jewelry can be copied at no price without loss or damage to the original object. Digital content can be copied. Can't you see the difference? Whether someone steals your art or not, YOUR ORIGINAL WORK IS STILL THERE.
People need to grow up and start being less butt hurt. 'Stomp all over your feelings' You, Sir, are a drama queen. Excuse the Ad Hominem.

You, sir, just like to be difficult and enjoy arguing with people on subjects you are CLEARLY outnumbered in. Stealing art is wrong. Period.
