Description Introducing Mairon, maia of Aulë; better known by his stripper name, Sauron, Dark Lord of Middle Earth.
But that's later. For now, enjoy the baby pictures.

I realize I'm playing a little fast and loose with the Silmarillion lore here... Arda starts out flat and therefore doesn't have a core, and exactly how or when the maiar were created wasn't clear to me, so I'm not sure when this 'creation' takes place chronologically. And, obviously, I'm making some stuff up to fill in the gaps of what is known about Mairon in a way that makes sense to me. ^_^; This comic is based on a dream I had after reading the Silmarillion, and not the book canon itself.

___
I had a dream about the origins of Sauron/Mairon the Maiar, and his time spent in the service of Aulë the Smith. Now I am trying to put some of that dream-material into a comic.

I want to explore some of the empty margins in the history of these characters, simply because there is a lot about Middle Earth theology that frustrates me a great deal, and I feel like the motivations of a lot of the 'dark' characters are not explored in the books at all (or at least, not to my satisfaction). So this is my sort of self-indulgent, mini "Paradise Lost" for the Silmarillion. XD

"better known by his stripper name, Sauron, Dark Lord of Middle Earth. "
This gets me every time. XDDDDD

As for the comic itself, this is probably my most favorite page of all. The creation and awakening of Mairon rendered so very beautifully. I just adore the panel where life is breathed into him, it is so powerful! And the liquid magmatic borders of the panels! So good! 8D

Bebe Mairon gets his first hammer, daw :33333 And his chest eye is shining bright! :3

I love the color scheme and fonts on this page.

The last panel has sent me all aflutter. Partially it is knowing how this ends, but the journey to get there is going to be awesome.

Man, searching for and downloading new fonts for this project is SOOOOO dangerous. XD Once I start, I can't stop. Eek! I'm so glad you like it dear! I'm learning a lot as I go. ...And yeah, there are no happy endings for this bunch. *sigh*

If I read the book right, the maia were created at the same time as the ainu, the first offspring of Iluvatar's thought. The ainu were of a higher order ("archangels") and the maia of a lesser order.

Gorgeous artwork, and I love your conceptualization. And you had me at "mini-Paradise Lost." (I'm a Milton fan.)

Re: "I realize I'm playing a little fast and loose with the Silmarillion lore here... "

Go with your imagination and interpretation by all means. The results are fabulous. David Brin's are words to live by (and I certainly apply them to my own interpretation of Tolkien's legendarium).

Looking forward to seeing more of your work.

"Don't just receive your adventures. Toy with them. Re-mold them in your
mind! Keep asking "What if...?"It's how you get practice not just being a
passive consumer, or critic, but a creative storyteller in your own right. "

I can't love you enough for this comment. The encouragement it gives me is immense, and I'm just pleased as punch that you like my work! I hadn't realized when I started this project just how prolific the Silmarillion fandom is on the web! Very frequently I find myself feeling a little cowed by just how many amazing and varied interpretations of the characters and events there are. It can be a little intimidating to jump into something like this fandom, where the concentration of love and the attention to canon is so high, but it's been pretty damn gratifying as well.

I'm trying to think of something intelligent to say here, but I'm just so utterly blown away by "Wild Abyss" that I'm kind of just frothing at the mouth and rolling around in ecstasy (just finished chapter 3). I think it's everything that I could possibly want in an addendum to the Silmarillion. (I should probably save further raving for your actual comments section...)

That essay seems like it is going to be immediately relevant to my life and I am googling it as we speak.

I'm more than happy to encourage you! I've seen a fair amount of Maironesque art floating around lately, but yours really resonates with me; I have added the Forging of Arda to my favorites. Honestly, *all* of your artwork across your fandoms is fantastic - *love* your use of color, form, and your distinctive style!

Although it's true that many Silmarillion fans are strongly attentive to canon, quite a number of us apply that knowledge to varied interpretations to the text, i.e., if you're going to bend or break canon, it helps to know it. Personally, I treat Tolkien's legendarium as mythology rather than solid (if imaginary) history, so there's a lot of room for all sorts of interpretation, including your marvelous vision born of a dream (now *that* is Tolkienesque ).

Anyway, I think you'd fit right in at the SWG! And thanks muchly for checking out my ficcish hackery.

You're very welcome, the first three pages are really wonderful!! And I am definitely looking forward to more! I don't think I have ever read any take on that certain part of Sauron's history, so I am very curious about what you will make of it.

Now, comment time!

It's hard for me to convey what this page makes me feel. But it is all kinds of wonderful wonderful heart-wrenching things. Each panel is perfect, Mairon's shaping, waking and giving life to him... <3 Now I understand what this jewel in his chest is for, it is where the Flame Imperishable dwells or so it now seems to me! This page gives me so many feels that I can't contain them, and how beautiful it all is, it makes me want to cry ;u; It shows how he was that perfectly formed being but with no purpose in the begining and with no destination, that he could have been anything, foul and cruel or perfect and kind hearted and then Eru breathed all these good things into him (while he could as well become evil in the very beginning was it some other force that was put into this perfect form) and then he becomes this absolutely adorable 'what's going on, is this life?' Mairon XDDDD Awwwww! Even more interested to see Melkor trying to get him over to his side omg XD I wish you had 6 hands and 3 tablets, then you'd draw these quicker and also two heads so that one could be getting some sleep frm time to time XDDDD No ok kidding, draw these in your own pace but never stop drawing <33333

Also, I've been sitting on my laptop for last week not to be tempted by tablet and then yesterday I finally saw this on my pc in full color and I was like 'gasp, how could it be even MORE AWESOME than it already was?!" XDDDD So you wow, you rock, draw more or I'll die. And submit all kinds of sketches and pictures you have drawn but not submitted cause we need them all XDDD aksjdksajd <3 And remember what I said about my dog going to eat you if you won't share these things with the world in a certain way 8P

Nooooo don't let your fluffy, fluffy dog eat meeeeeeeee ;A; I WAS GOOD! I SUBMITTED THE COMICS TO THE SILMARILLION CLUB. *trembling, holds the submissions up as evidence*

I can't tell you how much it means to me that you follow me and review my work like this. To know that someone out there likes my headcanon, and actually improves upon it with their input. It keeps me afloat in dark times, and in moments where I doubt myself for even bothering to make a fancomic (especially when other people's interpretations of the same characters are much more popular and better drawn... XD ). So thank you so much dear. I look forward to your page-long comments in my inbox like I look forward to birthday parties or a delicious steak. <3 You and Zlu bring me a lot of happiness.

ALSO I WISH I COULD BECOME AN ART-OCTOPUS. XDDD With no need to sleep or work.

Too late, she's already swimming through the ocean to eat you, ok kidding, actually she loves all people and things and when a thief stole our bike last year she ran with him because she thought she's going for a walk silly dog... (she returned, the bike didn't XDDDD) XDDD I'm very happy to see I was right and people are coming here to give you more feedback, you deserve it SO much <3 Now please force your loverboy to submit his art, like hover over him until he does or else - I have a devil cat too and I shall not hesitate to use it XDDD ( [link] )

I'm worried I am reviewing your work too much, when will you even answer all these comments, I am sorry XDDDDD Anyway, we totally know what you mean, a certain very talented person out there is drawing these things and we all know we'll never be 1/1000 as popular but NEVER STOP because you two are awesome and so what that we'll never have few thousand faves on something, we four are making people happy with our art and I assume you are also quite happy yourselves to draw these things too, that's what matters 83! Zlu and me think you guys stuff is absolutely wonderful and it's just the matter of more people finding it - once they see it, everyone is bound to love it! X3

Ok next time you hear from me will be around 31st january so you have time to calmly reply my too-many comments XDDD /hides

This concept of representing Mairon/Sauron' creation is just perfect ! His divine body forged by Aule the Smith and his Maia soul breathed by Eru !
But there are some grammatical issues :
Iluvater/Iluvatar
Erdu/Eru
Anyway this is pure awesomeness !!!

I'm happy you like it!
