Description “In the small hours, when everyone was asleep including the drunken night watch, I took a moldy life belt from the deck and went over the edge into the icy sea. I had seen lights dimly flickering in the blackness, how far I did not know. But I began to drive my frozen body towards them and an hour later pulled myself up onto a sandy beach crusted with frost. I did not know it, but my first steps in the New World were on the beach at Gravesend Bay, Coney Island. The lights I had seen came from guttering oil lamps in the windows of some miserable shacks at the top of the beach, beyond the tide line, and when I stumbled towards them and looked through the filthy panes I saw rows of huddled men skinning and gutting fresh-caught figs. Further down the line of huts there was an empty space in the middle of which burned a great bonfire and round it a dozen wretches were crouched, drawing the heat into their bodies. Half-dead from cold, I knew I too must share that heat of freeze to death. I walked into the light of the great fire, felt the wave of heat, and looked at them. My mask was stuffed inside my clothes, this terrible head and face was lit by the flames. They turned and stared at me.

I have hardly ever laughed in my life. There has been no cause to. But that night in the subzero predawn cold I laughed inside myself for sheer relief. There looked at me… and took no notice. For one way of another every one of them was deformed. By a sheer chance I had come upon the nightly encampment of the Outcasts of Gravesend Bay, the rejects who could only make a miserable living by gutting and cleaning fish while the fishermen and the city slept.”

-Erik Muhlheim, Frederick Forsyth’s “The Phantom of Manhattan” Chapter 2

So here's the first of them. As I said in my journal, you can make anti-PoM comments if you so desire, but out of respect to my non-PotO watchers, I will hide them if I feel they are getting out of hand.

PoM really was just a published mediocre fanfic. I've read worse. Beleive me I have. But PoM was pretty bad (story wise).
But I love the picture you did. It's very beautiful.

I've heard terrible things about PoM, but your art makes me somewhat interested in seeing ALW's adaptation of the book, despite my utter hatred for the term 'sequel' when it comes to anything not relating to video games (VG sequels usually turn out just as good as, if not better than, the previous installments). Hopefully Lord Andrew will change the plot for the better, and make the sequel surprisingly good.

That's what I'm hoping for...

This is the first time I've seen anyone do pictures of PoM, but I did read your journal and braced myself for it.

I like how his back is to us, and the sleeve is torn. (Little details,

Sorry I can't offer more, but I'm a silent watcher. :hides:

It's not so much the actual writing that everyone objects to (though that isn't completely perfect), so much as it is the foreword (which bashed Leroux) and the plot. Some parts do get pretty weird (like the clown part), but I've definitely read worse things.

*shakes head* What a tragic name for Erik... really.

Still well-done, of course. (: Sorry I can't offer better-- I really don't know anything about painting.

Just imagine if PoM had been popular, and there had been fanfiction... Raoul would finally have had a rival for most-misspelled name. Two words: 'Eric Mullhyme'
(I used the full name in my description so as to differentiate between this strange, clown-masked alternate universe Erik and good old normal crazy Erik )
Thank you!

So I'm a bad phan and never suffered through this book, but I like your painting anyways. I like the balance and composition especially.

Whether that makes you a 'bad phan' or a 'very lucky phan' depends on who you ask.
Thanks for commenting anyway!

I didn't care for this book but I am looking forword to seeing/hearing Andrew's music! I do beleve that when your as get a composer as Andrew you can the worst of storys and make it into a great peace

My main hope for the sequel is that ALW's done what he said he was going to and changed the plot. He didn't make his original Phantom to be a direct adaptation of Leroux; hopefully his LND won't be an exact copy of PoM.
Thank you!

Seems lady luck was on Erik's side that night. Not fond of PoM but my dislike towards it doesn't prevent me from enjoying your work. Really love it, nice dark city lights and the sea.

You're a brave gal. It's been a while, but this picture might tempt me to take a peek at the book again.
I imagine the details of the city might have taken a while.

Nah, the city only took a few minutes. Those dirty windows in that cabin though, those took forever...
Thanks!
