Description British Royal Navy Town-class cruiser HMS Belfast (C35) is a veteran of D-Day.  To be more precise, it was one of the first Allied ships to open fire on the German defenses, weakening the resistance to the amphibious assault of Normandy.  It destroyed the German battery at La Marefontaine, which would have impeded the capture of Gold and Juno beaches.  Later in the day, it treated wounded soldiers, and its crew went ashore to clear the beaches.  This would be the last time it saw combat in World War II.  Today, HMS Belfast is preserved by the Imperial War Museum (IWM), and is docked in the Thames River between London Bridge and Tower Bridge.

Brilliant shot of the old girl. Thank you for taking it.

Sadly the only large surviving vessel from Britain's powerful WW2 fleet. Their Battleships were wasted as were their carriers.

HMS Warspite was considered to be a museum until they discovered that she was in too bad of a material condition. Fortunately, she ran aground before she could make it to the breakers.

Part of her wreck can still be found at low tide next to the Castle in Marazion, Cornwall.

Great shot of her.  I loved it when they showed her in one of the Harry Potter movies.

Thanks!  Is that when the Order of the Phoenix was flying through London toward 12 Grimmauld Place?

I think that was precisely it.  She was lit up gaily, like the beautiful lady she is.

Nice pic. I've been aboard her. However, more precisely, she is of the second variant of the Town type. Edinburgh class.

Thanks for clarifying that!  I'd heard that before but wasn't completely sure.
