Description James Buchanan Duke (1856-1925) was one of the richest men at the turn of the century, as he earned billions of dollars from tobacco, textile, and energy industries.  In 1917, he bought a private Pullman car for nearly $40,000.  He named it Doris for his daughter, and traveled in it constantly until his death.  In 1927, Doris was bought by the Western Pacific Railroad, where it continued as a private car until California-based developer Fred Rosenberg turned it into an office in 1975.  In 1983, Doris was donated to the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, where it was restored and put on display.
