Description Dear Christopher,

Here is your friend Thomas the Tank Engine.  He wanted to come out of his station yard and see the world.  These stories tell you how he did it.  I hope you will like them because you helped me to make them.

- Your Loving Daddy

----

In the above letter to his son Christopher at the beginning of the Railway Series book Thomas the Tank Engine, the Revered W. Awdry could not have predicted how popular Thomas would become around the world.  The boy here is watching Thomas leave not Knapford Station on the Island of Sodor off the coast of England, but Shin-Kanaya Station on the Oigawa Railway in Shizuoka Prefecture.  The Oigawa Railway's Thomas is a former Japanese National Railways (JNR) C11-class 2-6-4 tank engine rather than a London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LB&SCR) Billinton E2-class 0-6-0 tank engine, and I doubt an electric multiple unit (EMU) train such as Tokyu railcar 7204 would count as one of Thomas's friends, but the spirit is still very much the same.
