Description After the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway (LT&SR) was grouped into the London, Midland and Scottish Railway in 1923, the LMS continued ordering and using Atlantic (4-4-2) tank engines based on Thomas Whitelegg's Edwardian-era Class 79 until the mid-1930s, when Sir William Stanier's 37 three-cylinder 4P 2-6-4 express passenger tank engines entered service.  In the early 1960s, British Railways electrified the LTSR line and retired and scrapped all the Stanier 2-6-4Ts except No. 2500, which is displayed at the National Railway Museum in York.  She is far from the only surviving 2-6-4T in Britain -- both LMS and BR two-cylinder 2-6-4Ts are common on heritage railways -- but she is the only three-cylinder 2-6-4T I can remember seeing.  Her 33C shedcode refers to Shoeburyness, the eastern end of the LT&SR line, which is still used as a depot by modern electric trains.
