Description SS Chusan, named for the island of Zhoushan (舟山) in China, was a 24,000-ton ocean liner built by Vickers-Armstrong for the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O).  By the time it was commissioned in 1950, the P&O was seeing more passengers to Australia than to India, so SS Chusan sometimes took side trips to Australia while working the Britain-India-Japan route.  It also stopped at Cape Town and Hong Kong a few times, and the last stop in India by any P&O steamer in 1970.  In 1973, SS Chusan was decommissioned, sold to Japanese trading company Mitsui, and towed to Taiwan.  Not quite a quarter century after entering service, the ship was cut up for scrap by Chou's Iron and Steel Co. Ltd. of Kaohsiung.  This postcard of SS Chusan is displayed at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich.
