Description The 3-foot narrow-gauge Santa Cruz Railroad opened in 1876, connecting Santa Cruz, California with the Southern Pacific Railroad station in Watsonville.  Its first engines were Baldwin 4-4-0 steam locomotives such as No. 3 Jupiter, which worked on the Santa Cruz Railroad until it was converted to standard gauge in 1883.  Jupiter was sold to the United Fruit Company-owned International Railroad of Central America (IRCA), which used it on the Ocos branch line in Guatemala until as late as 1960.  It was bought by D.C. Transit owner O. Roy Chalk, who had it shipped to Washington, D.C. and installed in a children's park.  As the locomotive was built in 1876, the Smithsonian Institution wanted to display it at the 1976 exhibition celebrating the bicentennial of American independence.  Mr. Chalk donated Jupiter to the Smithsonian, where it was restored to "as-built" condition with a walnut-wood cab and polished brass.  It is now on display at the National Museum of American History in a diorama meant to replicate the locomotive idling at a station.

One out of the three surviving Baldwin 8-18-C class 4-4-0s. The other two are the Eureka & Palisade #4 and the North Pacific Coast "Sonoma".
It's a shame only 1 out of the three is operational...

I know that engine! I stood right next to it, sort of... They apparently have an air line to the engine's whistle, and I can tell that's what it was because every once in a while, I heard the whistle and it had that metallic ring to it that could only be produced by the whistle itself making the sound.
