The 542 was built by Baldwin in 1903. She served the Southern for over 50 years. In 1947, she was working on the Winston-Salem division. She retired in 1954 and was placed on display in a Park in Winston-Salem. She arrived at the museum in the 1990s.

It's good to see another beautiful steam engine in preservation and best of all, it's indoors. This is a great photo you took.

This is the one that just cosmetically restored for the "Leatherheads" movie isn't it?

It was cosmetically restored (though it appeared as No. 604) and was pushed to Salisbury by a diesel.

TVRM 610 also starred in that movie as a C&NW locomotive.

Looks to be in very good shape, is there any plans to return it to steam or anything like that?

At the moment, the NCTM plans to keep J-542 on display, as there are already several locomotives in various stages of restoration. It would make a nice alternative to the diesel for the train ride around the museum grounds. Maybe we will hear more from the NCTM once a couple of other locomotives have been restored.
