Description On February 19, 1941, a few months before the United States was forced to fight in World War II, the government created the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve, which was augmented by the SPARS women's reserve.  To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Coast Guard Reserve, here are some models of World War II-era American military aircraft used for maritime rescue by the Coast Guard: a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bomber and a Douglas DC-3/C-47 Dakota transport.  The B-17 appeared in the James Bond 007 movie Thunderball with the Fulton Recovery System, which was built for the CIA early in the Cold War.  The models are on display at the San Diego Aerospace Museum in Balboa Park.
