Description No, I did not just make up both the words in the title. Although "violaceous" is a pretty badass word.

I fell in love with trogons during my study abroad in Costa Rica. Despite their colors, they're hard to spot a lot of the time just because they're so damn quiet. They have the coolest striped, squared tails. It's totally different from just about any other bird you're likely to see. Which I guess makes sense since trogons are kind of off in a group all their own in bird classifications.

Thanks! Definitely one of the cooler birds I saw down in Costa Rica.

Wonderful photo! You are right about them being so quiet. We almost walked right past a Black-throated Trogon who was perched right on the trail - the guide completely missed it! I was the lucky one who saw him. They are beautiful birds. Your photo is much sharper than anything I could get in the dark forest.

Trust me, I took many blurry shots on the way to one or two in-focus ones. Just got lucky this guy was a return visitor right outside the field station we were staying at, so I had plenty of opportunities. Glad you like it.

Isn't that how it usually is?

True enough. No matter how many pictures you take, there will only be one that is in focus. The problem for me has always been that that one in-focus picture is the one where the animal blinked or turned its head or flew away or stuck its head behind a branch, etc. etc., etc. I do have some great luck sometimes.
