Description The Ranger class scout, USS Darwin, prepares to take it's shuttle aboard after returning from an initial ground survey of a new class M world.

This one was mostly to try out one of the neat new planet graphics by Celticarchie [link] (thanks, bud!). Ranger by Drell-7, Shuttlecraft by Raul Mamoru (www.trekmeshes.ch).

Hmm... I can't seem to warm up to this design. Maybe it's those low-hung nacelles? Not even a bit ample...

The saucer has echoes of the USS Grissom to me.

The shape of it is not as rounded but has that bulk to it.

This is truly a magnificent render. I am not partial to the Ranger class, but this makes me want to get my Captain out of retirement and go exploring again. Question, what do you mean Ranger by Drell-7?? The Ranger was a FASA creation.

RobCaswell In reply to gummy-gundam [2013-05-20 05:22:57 +0000 UTC]

The Ranger was originally created by FASA. I don't specifically know who on staff or their employ did the design. In any event, I took their design and back-dated to its TOS form. Drell-7, working off my old drawings, built the model in Lightwave and added much more detail to my rework. So the modeling is all Drell-7. The re-design is a combination effort.

BasillArt [2013-05-14 16:00:40 +0000 UTC]

Delicious "hanging" angle and you pretty much snagged that lighting dead on. The sun's inference given the cloud shadows and that soft aqua-blue glow on the ship's underbelly? Nailed it!

I hate to say it, but it often bugs me when people with amazing models go to extra effort to compose a beautiful layout, with the added benefit of an equally gorgeous background... only to ignore obvious clues, placing the render's primary light source completely opposite (or just way-out-of-whack) any implied lighting direction provided by the background's most apparent and drastic shadows. No matter how perfect a model or rich a background, those factors alone can shatter illusions of reality and appreciation of a composition. Conversely, a render with numerous (minor) flaws could justifiably scream winner at the finish line by simply taking into account those most fundamental compositional aspects. Granted not everyone is always necessarily going for "realistic." But typically, it's fairly obvious when that is in fact the intent and yet many simply miss the boat.

I'd agree that the surface textures could use a little tweaking, but it's hardly an issue. That always requires some fine tuning, and Lord knows I have my own pots and kettles to scrub.

Again, awesome work!

I know what ya mean. So many 3D artists - and especially Poser/DS artists - drop the ball when it comes to lighting. It's tragic because lighting is the one thing that, if done right, forgives a wealth of other image sins! So thanks for noting that. It was fun to tweak the light 'til I got it "just so"

Exactly! "...forgives a wealth of other image sins." Well said, and in far fewer words. I know my comments tend to be the analogy ridden run-on sentences, but OCD is my blessing and my curse.
