Description
This map shows the provinces and districts of the hypothetical German Empire in 2020. It is modelled after the present and past administrative divisions with a general restructuring of the borders having taking place to significantly reduce the number of districts to reduce bureaucratic costs and to adjust to increased individual mobility. The smaller states of the Empire have been absorbed by the larger ones over time, as the power of many of the smaller dukes had been waning anyway, from which the larger states profited. Prussia especially gained many territories but was also forced to relinquish others to keep the balance of the Imperial States. While the administration in the German parts of the Empire remained relatively unchanged (although a greater push for federalism granted more power to the provinces), the Czech and Slovenian minorities enjoyed greater autonomy after the Nationalities Act of 1922, which also split the lands of the Bohemian Crown into Czech and German districts, while still functioning as singular entities under the Habsburg crown. The districts on the map are divided into rural and urban districts, with the latter ones being marked in a darker colour than the former ones. In addition, the map also shows the divisions of the largest (and free) cities of Berlin, Vienna and Hamburg.
