Description

Heathcliff "Cliff" Carter lived a bit of a privileged life.

He was young enough to remember how bad things were for his mother while still married to Owen Scott, and how much worse they were when he moved away to be raised by a single mother along with his two sisters.  He remembers not getting the toys he wanted growing up, not having the best clothes, not being able to go on trips or do any of the cool things other kids were doing.  He didn't fully understand it at the time, being as young as he was.  He just didn't understand why his mother or father didn't just pay for these things that he wanted, having no idea the financial difficulties his mother was going through or how his father was only interested in giving the barest minimum in terms of financial support.  But when his mother became a successful author, just as Cliff was becoming a teenager, finally he was able to get all the things he wanted.  He was able to get the nicest toys, go on trips to exotic locations, indulge in all the fun he missed out when he was growing up.  Cliff never let the money go to his head, as his mother made sure that he remained grounded and appreciative of all that he has.  But knowing how bad he had it growing up, Cliff made sure to enjoy the privilege that he had.  Cliff developed a bit of a cocky attitude, balanced well with the charisma and charm that he inherited from his father.  Cliff was the coolest guy in the room, and he knew it.  Even when Cliff came out as a bisexual, he did so with great confidence, knowing that his family supported him and that he needed no one else's approval but his own and that of his loved ones to feel this is the right decision.

Cliff eventually sought out a career as a pilot, forming his own charter company as well as competing in aerial races.  When he was given powers by his father-in-law Derek Powell, Cliff jumped at the chance to become a superhero, knowing it was yet another adventure.

As Geomancer, Cliff has the ability to generate powerful seismic shockwaves.  He can use these shockwaves to destabilize and manipulate the earth, as well use them as offensive blasts.

Origins

The character of Geomancer also went through considerable changes in his production history.  Originally he was the oldest child, and would be something of the central viewpoint figure for the story.  This then changed to him being the twin brother of another character, but he still remained something of the main character until I pulled back and made him into more of a supportive figure while promoting Dr. Power to the viewpoint role.

He also originally went by "Impact," with the ability to alter his molecular density to become incredibly dense thus increasing his strength and durability, or decrease it allowing him to become intangible.  Again, this was refined due to wanting to avoid the "Grab bag of powers" and instead making his abilities more elemental in nature.  Giving him control over the earth seemed like a nice way to give him an ability that set him apart from the rest of the team but also gave him a more "Down to earth" powerset, if that makes any sense.

I decided on making him bisexual since I wanted the Power League to be a team without any straight white males on it, and I didn't really have a lot of bisexual men in the lineup of characters that I had.

I kind of envisioned him as being the Johnny Storm to Starfighter's Peter Parker, but with the added wrinkle that the two do NOT get along and would not be friends.  Geomancer is a jock while Starfighter is a geek.  Cliff is the cool kid while Conner is the nerd.  The two can work together, and can respect one another.  But they're simply not going to be friends.

In regards to his costume, that also took some refining.  The look he has now is pretty much the look I had settled on him for a while.  However, it was originally gold and blue rather than red and gold.  I changed it to the current colors to match the red/ blue/ yellow/ white color pattern I had going on, as well as free up the blue/ gold colors for another character.  It also worked out well since red works as a bit of an "Earthy" tone.  I made the belt, glove and boot fringes resemble seismograph readings in order to visually sell the nature of his abilities.
