Out of all the new designs this time around, this one has to be my favorite. Actually, it's probably my favorite design overall.

As you might not know, I am a huge Spider-man fan (if the numerous fanart and the many black and white comic strips bitching about the comic didn't give that away), and it always kind of bugged me that there was never any direct inspirations for his character. Sure, you can't swing a cat without seeing another version of Superman or Batman or Wonder Woman or Captain America, since they are pretty simple and straightforward concepts. But heroes directly in the same vein as Spidey? They are very few and far between. Usually they just get presented as being "bug" themed heroes, or without any superpowers, which I think kind of misses the point. The only other hero I can think really tried to go for that "urban hero" style design is Jack Hawksmoore from the old Authority series.

So, in that vein, I wanted to create an "urban" superhero. His design was relatively straightforward, very akin to a John Byrne style design in it's simlicity. I always wanted to give Spider-Man a hood and short cape for some reason, so I just carried those elements over to his design. The red boots and gloves help his limbs stand out and help for color balance with the rest of his body. For his face mask, I wanted to do something again in the vein of Spidey's mask, with unconventional eye holes or structure to the overall face. I experimented a little with giving him "eyes" similar to Spider-Man 2099's mask, but that seemed to be too much of a rip off of an original concept. Doodling around with the look gave me that "blank faced" look, framed with the skull cap, "cheeks" and chin which gives the shape of a face and allows for some expression if the artist allows it, but still allows it to be featureless and intimidating. Finally, inspired partially by Jack Hawksmoore's design, I gave him "grips" on his hands and feet to allow him to better cling to buildings in his nightly jaunts.

For his powers, I saw him having enhanced strength, agility, durability, but primarily his main ability would be a short range, line of sight teleportation ability, which would also be coupled with an enhanced spacial awareness of his surroundings, which would aid him in his battles and his jumps. That teleportation ability is what would give him his moniker- as in "Disappearing like a shadow in the...". It also allows the character to engage in those epic, leaping and jumping poses that Spidey is known for, without directly copying his mode of transportation.

This series has been a real treat, and it was really fun to do. So much so, that I'm already planning on another batch of original creations for the near future.
