Thunderbolts was one of the hottest series Marvel had for a while, especially in that first year when the big secret was still a major factor of the storyline. Before the series became Marvel's version of Suicide Squad.

Personally, I think dropping that bit from the series was a big mistake, as there was at least another year left worth to work with the concept. Afterwards, the book became fairly standard superhero fare.

Still, the character designs were top notch. Mark Bagley is one of my favorite artists of all time, and he really knocked it out of the part with the designs. In a lot of respects it was form over function, but they were impressive, modern designs that managed to have a strong link between name and visual that I think a lot of modern comics lack, in addition to having unique features within the costumes rarely seen before or since. Chief amongst these is the team leader, Citizen V/ Baron Zemo.
