Description 7 1/2" x 11" Derwent Inktense on linen-textured paper.

Another piece done some time ago (back in 2006) on the pad that came with my Derwent Inktense set, this time my attempt at a traditional cherry branch. I love the intensity of the colors, for once the cherry blossoms came out bright enough to scan well. Linen textured paper is fun too. This was more painted than drawn since I used plenty of water -- but it dried waterproof!

Well, I got my tattoo done on Thursday! This pic was taken with my phone right after it was done. I will send you a link to a better pic once it has healed.

Beautiful! I've been thinking of getting cherry blossoms tattooed on my side. Would you object to me taking your art to the tattoo artist? It is just gorgeous!

I love how you did your tattoo -- they came out so gorgeous. I hope you're happy with them on your skin. Sorry I didn't reply sooner and glad you went for it anyway.

They are relatively new. I first saw them last year as a new product from Derwent in the ASW catalog. Blick carries them, and Blick is much better about patiently back ordering something that sold out before you got yours. In their first six months they were very hard to get because orders were massive, neither company could keep them in stock. I got the Gift Set with spiral bound pad, sharpener and brush because Blick had that in stock but not the 24 color set by itself. Right now Blick has the 24 color set and 12 color set on sale, each with a freebie from Derwent thrown in, at a lower sale price than I've seen them at all. They toss in two Derwent watercolor pencils and a techniques DVD for the large set, and just the watercolor pencils with the small set. It's a good time to get your set. If I wasn't broke on account of paying off my computer, I'd order a spare set to get the DVD since I know I'll use them up -- mine are indeed starting to wear down!

They are wonderful for knotwork and maybe for manga too, any kind of art that I outline with Pigma Microns it's easy to fill in the area dry, then using a damp brush smooth the color to a brilliant tone without any variations unless you wanted them and varied the dry layer. I use a waterhandle brush sometimes for it so that I don't get it too sopping or too dry. And of course like this painting, I can use them more like colored inks too!

They are great -- and they are genuinely new. Nothing like them existed before as far as I know. Derwent seems to do this every year or two. They must have hired new researchers. Last time it was Derwent Graphitints -- 8B graphite watersoluble pencils with a bit of color mixed in. Very faint color when used dry, it's like old sepiatone photographs with a shiny graphite-looking feel -- and oh, when I add water, it bounces and gets more vivid. However, even wet, Graphitint drawings have that graphite shiny grayness to them that makes any scene I do with them come out extremely spooky. If I ever do horror illustration, especially doing a cover on a horror story collection (I am thinking of doing one), I have to do a scene from a story in Derwent Graphitints so it has that look a little like a slightly colorized black and white photo. Gorgeous yet weird... and Derwent came out with it out of nowhere.

They got inventors in their laboratories and I can't imagine what they'll come up with next. The other latest thing after Inktense was Derwent Coloursoft, very super soft coloured pencils in brilliant smeary colors. Soft and maybe a little softer than Prismacolors -- this from the company with the hardest of the artist grade coloured pencils. Not that I don't LIKE Derwent coloured pencils, they just tended to be less smeary and more hard. Now they have two types, and that is very neat. I'm getting ~kitten42 the set of 72 for her birthday this June and got myself the set of 24 that came with a free six-pack -- the six-pack intrigued me. It's the one thing I'd recommend getting such a small set, because the six colors are chosen for good artist mixing colors. I did a decent hummingbird just with the six colours in the six-pack bubble pack set, and that surprised me with how well it came out.

Wow, thank you! I drool at so many Asian renderings of cherry blossoms and up till now my attempts have been very crude. These finally look as if I could hang them in a Chinese restaurant!

Actually Robert, yours look too realistic to hang in a chinese restaurant. All the ones I've seen are of the looser simplistic chinese style.

Ahhh so it's more of a blend. Hmm. I've seen some detailed Chinese restaurant ones but you're right -- and maybe if I paint one now, I could get closer to the actual style. I'm a lot closer -- and it's funny that I got more realistic! Maybe ink painting. I tried some in ink painting but didn't like how they came out.

Thank you! I've been really working on composition lately and I appreciate this so much -- I do it more intuitively than otherwise and so need to know if I'm getting it right or just going off on some weird personal Robert-riff thinking it's good composition.

They're so bright, yet dainty! Very pretty. You can really see the texture of the paper, too.

robertsloan2 In reply to Peachfuzz [2007-03-11 21:54:14 +0000 UTC]

I love how bright they are. I always liked the Japanese cherry blossom paintings and this time I managed to get the texture right -- and most of all get them bright enough to show up on a scan the way so many previous attempts did not.

The paper texture is so great. I only have ten sheets of it total and have used two, it's this little 8 1/2" x 11" spiral pad with plastic covers that came with the Derwent Inktense Gift Set -- a bit more, but Blick had it when the Inktense set of 24 was sold out and had a long wait date, so I got the Gift Set so I wouldn't have to wait. I'm so happy now that I did because that pad is so neat. It also came with a sharpener and a nice little size 4 watercolor brush too, so that was convenient. Not that much more when it was on sale anyway.

I'm not answering the long long comment because I'm going to have to fold up again for a while now, but have fun! I posted the other Inktense painting too, with ripples on water and trees silhouetted in front of them.
