Description Have you ever dreamt of a picture for a while, and one unexpected day, being in the perfect condition to finally make it ?

This is the story of that one.

I have dreamt for a long time to make a white snowy owl in a dark stormy sky.
This special evening, I sat on the snow, trying to be the more "forgotten" I could by the bird. But off course, you can never expect to notice a bird of prey before he notices you !

The bird first stared at me, and finally came back to gaze arround for a prey. I felt accepted.

About half an hour later, it took off, just before the sunset.

QuΓ©bec, Canada, 2010
This photo has been made without feeding the animal.

This is really beautiful, you're right about the perefct lighting. The colours are pretty spectacular too, simple but stunning.

what 300mm were you using?? At 5.6 and the low light you certainly have captured an amazingly sharp image!! very well done for your patience.. you have been well rewarded

Thank You very much !

I use the Sigma 100-300mm f4 zoom lens. That's very sharp. Sharper than the 300mm f4 Canon that I have tried a few times (very unexpected when usually comparing Canon with Sigma).

But some people say that that lens would be one of the best lens (for its price) that Sigma would have built.

I have no money to buy a 500mm or more anyway, and when I have this money, I prefer travel to observe and photograph new subjects.

Take care and thank you,

ah! a lot of people have recommended lenses to me that 'out-perform' canon lenses.. Sigma would be in my price range as well - I can't justify paying for an L series canon just yet Thanks for your info, continue getting great shots!

This is exactly that one :

[link]

It's said on this page that the product is discontinued but You find some in shops or either on the web.

I bought it arround 1300 CAN$ 4 years ago but I have seen it once at the price 900 CAN$...
And Maybe cheaper if you can it second hand.

The construction is not as solid as canon lenses but the price, the 10 years garranty and the sharpness worth it I think.

Good Luck !

Thank you Gilles,

Yes, I was myself proud of this one.

Because here in QuΓ©bec, it becomes hard to be alone arround snowy owls. And another problem is that photographers do not wait anymore to have great shots : they buy live mice in pet shops and give them to feed the owls. And the owls come instantly toward you, that gives you right away some great shots.

But personally, I chose avoid this method for questions of disturbance. As well birds get used to and come to fly close from the cars, which can be very dangerous for them. And I asked myself also : what natural behaviour could I witness taking pictures that way ? It seems to me that we, wildlife photographers, just reproduce what we live in the everydaylife of western societies : some of us come to consume wildlife photography.

That's why I did wanna prove that we can still make great pictures of owls without feeding them.
