Description This is perhaps one of my oldest and favorite pieces. All the way back when and I used to work togther in the same studio. His pencils have so much life to them. I think he's in the top five people I like to ink over. Maybe even number one.

Now that's some seriously good inking. Really clean. bobbet's pencils were good, but your inks have really kicked it up a notch. I'd love to colour this. Would that be cool?

Thanks! And it'd be great to see you color it. If you need a high-res of it, I can have that emailed to you.

Cheers but I don't need the hi-res lines, these are more than good enough for me. Here's my colouring [link]

Heh, thanks. Yeah. It takes a long time to get things to look that slick. A good scanner helps tons too. Thanks again for the compliment. Oh, and the Hamtaro icon... awesome. LOL

Bobbett was sort of studying a lot of his work at that time (as I recall). I'm sure he'd be gald to hear that. ^_^

Personally I would've varied the thickness of the rope that's closer, to give it more depth, but you handled his pencils really really well Nice lineweights too ^_^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Robo-Bug In reply to mechangel2002 [2005-05-25 19:10:54 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Yeah, The line weights of the rope could have varied a lot more than what they do (if they even vary at all right now. lol). I was just worried about taking away focus from Dare Devil and the foremost pigeon. At least that's what I was worried about back at that time. If I did that piece today, I'd have played with those lines a lot more, and just added a thicker holding line to Dare Devil and the pigeon. I probably would have gotten rid of the halos I have on the rope as it goes through the darker area of the cross, as well as pretty much all of the halos on the page. Heh, I used to be terrified about achieving seperation.

Thanks for the critique! I love to hear what I could have done better, or what other people feel they would have done. You only learn if you're willing to listen to critiques, and not take them as personal attacks. So if you ever see anything in my stuff that doesn't feel right to you, PLEASE say so. You'll only be helping me get better. ^__^

Thanks again!

Yeah the halo on the baton and his hand are kinda noticeable I used to be like that too, now i want to go back and fix some of my inks and save them from the halos haha!

That's good to hear I tend to be totally honest when I post, so when I spot something I point it out (and some people don't like that lol)

The best critiques I ever got was from Robert Armstrong (Pat Lee's inker for those that didn't know). He was extremely good about finding every little spec of something wrong or noticably destracting. From those completely honest critiques, I became a whole lot better in an extremly short amount of time. That reminds me... I really should write him sometime... heh, how time flies. ^__^`

a great yahoo group to join would be The Inkwell [link] It has a lot of pros on it, and they sometimes give critiques (Sean Parsons, John Dell, and Tim Townsend to name a few". If they start liking what they see, then you'll get some comments on what you can improve on, or at least a "Nice Job" here and there. They can really teach you a lot, and give you some ideas as to what an inker has to do sometimes (like drawing in whole panels because the penciler was lazy. lol) Everyone there is really cool, and the critiques are WAY helpful. ^__^

Take Care and God Bless,
Cole Dawg

Oh god..... I actually AM a member of that yahoo group >_< haha... I just don't have time to read the messages n stuff, and the one time I DID post on there, I got maybe one comment about my inks. Maybe when my schedule isn't so crazy I'll hang out in there again ^_^

I'm going to be doing a project with * bobbett and I have to say your inks are impressive. What are your page rates for inking and are you taking on any new projects? Thanks, Ben.

Robo-Bug In reply to Bagheera-8 [2005-05-25 15:16:44 +0000 UTC]

That's great to hear! Bobbett is really cool to work with. Are you going to be coloring his work? Oh, and thanks for thinking my inks are impressive. I still have a long ways to go on them, but they get a better result everytime.

As for page rates and such, I'm more of a one shot guy. I usually ink something for around $100, but that price is high because I really lack the time and drive to do it as a profession. I'm what you would call SLOW, and with my already very good fulltime job as a graphic designer, I have very little spare time for inking pages (though I always seem to cram in a couple of hours daily). I just show my stuff at conventions for kicks now. Just to see what editors will say. Make sure I still have a bit of good inking in me. That sort of thing. I'm just way to slow and feather brained to actually do a monthly. And Bobbet would kill me cause he originally asked me to ink the first three issues of Ninja Monkey and I had to turn him down. I'd like to see his book come out before the turn of the next century. lol

Ok... That was a long explanation. Sorry about that. ^__^`

Rell was really polite and approachable, which surprised me, considering his icon is of a man doused in flammable liquids and set on fire. I'm not planning a monthly; it's a one shot graphic novel. I don't know if I will color it or not. There is an elegance to pencil and ink drawings that I like very much. I certainly understand about the time issue being a businessman myself. Maybe I'll get you to ink the cover or something.

I love cover work :-D I'm doing a promotional poster (possible cover) inks for Bobbett's Ninja Monkey book right now. I'll probably post it next wekk. I'm heading to a small anime convention in North Carolina and won't be back for a bit.

Bobbett is just a really cool guy. He's a fun person to work with, and really just loves the whole comic book thing. Working with him in a studio was just awesome.

*must get back to practicing*

Thanks. It was probably my first "Good" piece. It's almost 2 years old now. I really have to get the rest of my stuff up. I always try for good crisp lines, which is probably why I look horrible over some pencilers like Romita Jr. Big hats off to Scott Hanna for being able to capture those pencil lines. ^__^

Thanks again!

Thanks, Thorcus! The colors that Soto did over the piece were way cool too. I still need to get the super high res from him so I can get a poster of it made. The tree of us have one heck of a great time working together.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawsome man. Do you just ink with a normal ip pen or with markers, or digitally. And what size is the origional print.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Robo-Bug In reply to malimo [2005-05-25 02:22:13 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for liking it. ^__^ I use a couple of different tools, but my favorite and most use tool is my Winsor Newton series 7 finest sable #3 brush (try saying that five times fast). A good brush just gives the smoothest line.

The original size of the piece was a two page spread (22" x 17"). It took some time, but Bobbett is a lot of fun to work over.

Thanks again!
