Woah, very freaky!
I think it's Ash, and it maybe took me two/three hours to do? All I did was whittle the bark off and add a bit of shape, sand down and glue and tie the ribbon on it. It's not quite finished, I want to add a bind rune to it, but I've got to decide what runes I want to use and do the design and then work out how I can actually PUT the bind rune on it. After that, it'll be done.
What wood are you using?

I use Maple wood, it was actually a drumstick in its previous life and I am now trying to get it into the rough shape. The good thing is that it is already dry so it will not crack when it dries out as fresh wood would do, the dark side is that this wood is so hard to cut that I could not work longer than 30 minutes on it today. Later I start carving engravings into the wand probably northern mythology, maybe one or two runes. Runes are pretty awesome to study, they have so many meanings. I suggest looking for inscribings on coins, rune stones and brakteats for your purpose, they are full of spells. Do you mind updating the image if you add things or finish it?

I'm learning to read the runes, and have a good few books on them, so I should manage to put something together. I've got a hazel wood piece that I'm planning on using next. Ash is really good and easy to work with though.
