Army, stationed in Camp Taji. Fortunately, he has a couple weeks leave to spend in Tennessee with his wife and son.

Fortunately, we can talk to him every day. He's the network administrator for his camp, so he has access to the phone and computer.

Thanks, because I don't often get the chance to go to that account. I have it set up so that I use a different browser to be logged in to that one.

Thank-you very much! That means a lot to me, and yes, Stop Loss does stink. It amounts to a form of slavery, all because the US government spent so many years scaling back the military and now finds itself shorthanded. Of course, being involved in an unpopular war doesn't help recruitment either.

Thank-you so much! My son tells me that a posting in Afghanistan is much worse than Iraq. It's hard not to worry. You're right that the world has changed a lot in the last thirty years or so. I guess being in Iraq isn't as bad as Vietnam, though, so I'm thankful for that.

Yep when my son was over there, I couldn't sleep until one day I decided to stop worrying like crazy unless the CACO Officer came knocking on my door.

Thank-you! What a stupid policy Stop Loss is! It amounts to involuntary servitude. What really angers me is all those people who got elected because they promised to bring our troops home and then did nothing. John McCain may have been a bit extreme for my taste, but he was at least honest about what he would do about the war.

You're very welcome. And I share your anger about the false promises. Unfortunately it seems to me that the present state of our political system is such that βhonest campaigningβ is a contradiction in terms.
The government is not accountable to the people, nor is the media, nor is the financial sector (in spite of the fact that it recently received about a trillion dollars from the public along with a legislative proviso which bans any oversight of or investigation into the allocation and use of the funds). We are told (contrary to that old wives tale that democracy is government of the people, by the people, for the people) that democracy means we get to tick a box or pull a lever every four years, and subsequent to fulfilling that single duty, we should shut up because our input is irrelevant. During his tenure, Bush expressed his contempt for public opinion innumerable times and constantly stressed the fact that he, to quote Dick Cheney, βdoes not make policy based on public opinion polls [and] he should notβ. I have heard Obama make similar statements, along with a slew of congressional representatives. If the only role of the public in the present system is to choose between two ideologically-analogous privileged elites every four years (and funnel money to rich investment firms at a time when many of us can't even find basic employment), I would posit that America is not a democracy at all, but rather, a plutocracy. So it would follow that, if the American government is to genuinely represent the people, the entire economic and political system must be overhauled and restructured by the people themselves. And wow, Iβm really sorry; I completely did not intend to launch into a massive tirade like this. Sometimes I donβt know when to stop typingβ¦

I agree with you completely. The sad thing is that the people don't even realize that the United States isn't really a democracy, and never was. The only true democracy was Ancient Greece. Don't feel bad about writing so much. I get to ranting to my family and they have to tell me when to quit.
