Description Man, it feels like a long time since I last drew anything anime-related.

In case you weren't aware, Vic Mignona, who is perhaps best known as the voice of Edward Elric in Fullmetal Alchemist, is currently producing and starring as Captain Kirk in a new series of fan films under the title "Star Trek Continues"- hence this mashup.  "Continues" is actually the first live action fan series I've been able to sit through without cringing.*

I haven't seen many fan films, to be honest, so it would be unfair of me to pretend I know that all the rest are no good.  However, I've tried watching "Star Trek Phase II", née "New Voyages," which, by some accounts, has been considered to be the gold standard of fan series, but it didn't matter how impressive it looked- while I respect the time, effort and passion that goes into these amateur productions, I just could not get past the clunky acting.  Also, something about the actual stories gave me the sense they were trying too hard.

"Continues," on the other hand, not only stars people that can act, the scripts feel like they could be genuine episodes of the original series.  www.startrekcontinues.com

* There's also an animated one called "Star Trek Aurora" that I thought was quite good.

Really?  I assumed that Ed was his most famous role.  Well, thanks for the comment.

I love Fullmetal Alchemist, and Star Trek Continues. I never made the connection until reading the description and seeing the picture. Really good job, again. Marvelous.

Thanks again.  I'll say that Continues has been a bit more hit and miss for me since I posted this; episodes 7 and 8 were kind of let-downs, imho, but the most recent one, episode 9, was pretty great.  Sadly, I know they're wrapping up the series soon; hopefully the final episodes will be good.

I love what they are doing at Star Trek Continues.  The episodes and shorts they've done are absolutely amazing.

As far as anime goes, for me the gold standard will always be RoboTech, since I was a child of the 80s.

So was I, but I didn't get into anime until my twenties. I may have been peripherally aware of Robotech, but I've never seen it; I'd kind of like to some day as I'm kind of curious about it now.

Someone should totally cosplay a Ed wearing the Star Fleet uniform. That would be awesome.

That would be amazing. I really want to see that now. It would actually be a good alternative for someone who might not have the time or resources for a full-fledged Edward Elric costume, since the Starfleet uniform is probably easier to acquire or put together than Ed's normal outfit.

What a great mashup! I'm a huge Trek fan, though I haven't seen much of FMA. I watched the first several episodes (including that gut-wrenching one with the chimera...), but it didn't really keep my interest.

Should I give it another shot?

I'm sorry to butt in here, but if you are ever looking for a good anime to watch, one I think you'll really enjoy is the remake of FMA called Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Brotherhood has many of the same elements and characters as the first FMA, but instead, it focuses on the original manga storyline written by Hiromu Arakawa. Personally, I have seen both the first Fullmetal Alchemist series and the Brotherhood series, and in my opinion, Brotherhood does a much better job at keeping your interest. It's exciting, it's full of action and drama, the characters are diverse and lovable, the story moves at a fairly quick pace but is easy enough to follow, and the ending is fantastic and satisfying. (I say that because the ending of the first FMA series was sort of like a slap in the face to the fans.)

So, like I said, if you really want to give FMA a shot, I would definitely take your chances with the newer series, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. In my own opinion, it is the better version on all counts. There are 64 episodes total, and I know that may sound like a lot, but it's SO good that it will feel like it ended too soon.

(Oh, and just a little side note, this series does contain a bit of blood, violence, and gore, but that's not the entire focus and I don't think it's something that will bother you too much. At least, it didn't bother me, and I'm not usually one to flock to that kind of thing. )

I absolutely adore Brotherhood with all my heart and soul, and I would surely watch it a thousand more times if I had the time to do so! I think it's something anyone can watch, relate to, and enjoy!

Oh and by the way, your artwork is great! I really liked this crossover.

Thanks. It was kind of a quick drawing. The positive response I've been getting on it kinda makes me wish I'd put more effort into it, but I guess it serves its purpose. I appreciate your commenting.

I dunno, man, it depends on your tastes. Not everybody likes the same stuff, which is why I'm often somewhat hesitant to make recommendations. I suppose it maybe starts off kind of slowly and then gets better as it goes along. From what I can tell, it's pretty highly regarded- I once even heard someone who is not normally a fan of anime recommend the series; it's probably one of the better animes I've seen at least, though I'm far from being an authority on anime; there's still a lot of stuff I have yet to see. I guess I would say it's worth watching, but don't blame me if you still aren't into it.

Thanks for the comment.

It occurs to me that this comes across as a very tepid recommendation of FMA.  Just to clarify, I went to the trouble of buying the series on DVD, so obviously I'm very much a fan of the show; I just don't expect everyone to be a fan.
