Description
One of the greatest of of the film composers of all time, credited with over 400 scores for film and TV and over a 100 classical compositions. He is probably most noted for his western soundtracks for Sergio Leone with "The Good The Bad and the Ugly" regarded as one of the most distinctive and influential of that series. Starting out as Jazz musician in the 40's he started ghost writing in the 50's for film and television, theatre and radio. His talent for unique arrangements and melodies attracted high profile musical artists from Paul Anka, to The Pet Shop Boys and Andrea Bocelli. But it was his film scores that made cemented his place as one of the greats. He composed the themes for such high profile directors as John Carpenter( The Thing) Brain De Palma( The Untouchables) Roman Polanski( Frantic) and of course "The Hateful Eight" with Quentin Tarantino with which he finally won that elusive Oscar for his work. A very distinct, brooding score and certainly worthy of an Oscar but it should have been given to him for his work on Roland Joffe's film "The Mission". My favorite of his and often ranked on polls as the greatest soundtrack of all time. Also, one of the highest selling soundtracks of all time. Other notable contenders for great listening - "Once Upon a Time in the West", "Frantic", "Melena" and "Cinema Paradiso". As perhaps the greatest composer and contemporary John Williams best said of his passing,"Truly one of the greatest icons of film music with many iconic scores to be remembered by."
