Description Thats my first underwater Scene render...Hope you like it !

Rendered with Cinema 4D edited to photoshop Cs6

After the US Pacific fleet had been seriously weakened at Pearl Harbor, at the beginning of the war in the Pacific much of the responsibility in the battle against the Japanese expeditionary forces rested on the shoulders of the American submariners. The submarines of the Gato Class were large fleet submarines that had been specially developed for use in the wide expanses of the Pacific Ocean. Due to their size and equipment they could remain in non-stop service for 75 days. Between 1940 and 1944, 77 Gatos were build at four different shipyards. Together with the Balao and the Trench Class they formed the backbone of the US submarine fleet. Most of these subs went to the Pacific, but a few were also used in the Atlantic. These submarines were extremely successful. Not only did they sink a large number of irreplaceable freighters and tankers, but they also decimated the Imperial naval fleet. The most grievous losses were the aircraft carriers Shokaku, Taiyo, Unyo and Taiho. Developed for use in the expanses of the Pacific, the Gato was much larger than for example the German type VII submarine. It had a length of 95 m, a beam of 8.20 m and a draught of 4.60 m. Its displacement was 1825 tons surfaced and 2410 tons dived. The diesel engine gave it a speed of 20.75 knots on the

After playing Diluvion, this scene was exactly one of the most intense moments in the game. Especially an entire location absolutely filled to the brim with those mines.

But then comes that sick satisfaction when you detonate them all - and an enemy vessel right next to them.

Can you do a similar rendering of a Balao class without the mines? I'm looking for such an image for a book cover. Ideally, I'd like the bow to the right and just a little more water above the vessel.

it amazes me the amount of production on every side during ww2, the sheer weight in steel and manpower, and the fact that alot of it ended up at the bottom of the ocean, its dumbfounding. Great work as always man

I had to look twice to realize it wasn't another U-boat piece. Amazing what U.S. submariners accomplished against the Imperial Nipponese Navy in WWII. Why we don't get gripping movies about these heroes than more crappy remakes/prequels from Hollywood, I'll never understand. It shouldn't stop there, heroes shouldn't just be those who were on the winning side, like Letters from Iwo Jima so properly portrayed.

Wonderful ocean surface hull reflections....

What they did against the Japanese navy can't be compared to their counterpart German U-Boat. Even if US submarines had good techonology and were made in a war safe zone with all the needed materials, they couldn't compete with the German submarines. Nazy Germany had to use submarines, it was their only way to sunk down Anglo-American ships, while it wasn't as much crucial for the USA... (Germany produced far much more submarines than the USA) U-Boat were known for their modern technologies (by the end of the war, Germany had started producing electric stealthy submarines! They even had project to use submarines as launching platforms for rockets) And secondly, Anglo-American ships had very good sonar (plus the fact they knew how to read "enigma" secret German codes), it became very hard for U-Boat to sunk them as the years passed. Anglo-American ships developped counter-strategy to fight back German submarines. At last, by the end of the war, Nazy submarines bases were bombed almost everyday, so it's quite amazing they were able to sink so many ships. The same can't be say with Japanese ships, they lacked good sonars, were less numerous than Anglo-American convoy and were lacking good protection from Japanese war ships. So the task to sunk them were easier for US submarines (but far from me to want to diminish the courage of US submarines sailors!)

Beautiful ship! I'm very glad we have some of these revolutionary fleet submarines preserved at various places in the US - or, at least, I think some of the preserved ones were Gato-class (I know the USS Pampanito SS-383 back home is a Balao class). I think in the end, probably the two most critical weapons of the Navy in WW2 were the submarine and the carrier. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, they decimated the traditional battle fleet components (cruisers, battleships) - but they didn't get the submarines and the carriers, and even Admiral Yamamoto knew this was a critical mistake.

Other than the size and poor performance of the American torpedoes for most of the war, how did the Gato technically compare to its German workhorse counterpart, the Type VII/C?
