Description The 1st American Volunteer Group (AVG) of the Chinese Air Force in 1941–1942, nicknamed the Flying Tigers, was composed of pilots from the United States Army (USAAF), Navy (USN), and Marine Corps (USMC), recruited under presidential authority and commanded by Claire Lee Chennault. The ground crew and headquarters staff were likewise mostly recruited from the U.S. military, along with some civilians.
The group consisted of three fighter squadrons with about 20 aircraft each. It trained in Burma before the American entry into World War II with the mission of defending China against Japanese forces. Arguably, the group was a private military contractor, and for that reason the volunteers have sometimes been called mercenaries[citation needed]. The members of the group had lucrative contracts with salaries ranging from $250 a month for a mechanic to $750 for a squadron commander, roughly three times what they had been making in the U.S. forces.
The Tigers' shark-faced fighters remain among the most recognizable of any individual combat aircraft and combat unit of World War II, and they demonstrated innovative tactical victories when the news in the U.S. was filled with little more than stories of defeat at the hands of the Japanese forces.
The group first saw combat on 20 December 1941, 12 days after Pearl Harbor (local time). It achieved notable success during the lowest period of the war for U.S. and Allied Forces, giving hope to Americans that they would eventually succeed against the Japanese. While cross-referencing records after the war revealed their actual kill numbers were substantially lower, the Tigers were paid combat bonuses for destroying nearly 300 enemy aircraft,[1] while losing only 14 pilots on combat missions.[1] In July 1942, the AVG was replaced by the U.S. Army 23rd Fighter Group, which was later absorbed into the U.S. 14th Air Force with General Chennault as commander. The 23rd FG went on to achieve similar combat success, while retaining the nose art and fighting name of the volunteer unit.

Special thanks to my friend itifonhom for his sally bomber,

Excellent ! One of the first books I read about WW2 was "God is my Co-Pilot" by Col. Robert L. Scott. Always remembered it. I wept when I heard that Col Scott passed away in 2006 and later Tex Hill in 2007. We won't see their kind again.

Thank you for making this! I've always admired the Flying Tigers and their contributions to the Asian/Pacific side of World War 2. Even in my childhood years, I remember being amazed with the way they painted their planes with the teeth and stuff. Quite an intimidating look! To me, their planes are among some of the most iconic images of the war. Granted, there were many other planes during WW2 with various kinds of artwork on them, but I still have to say the Flying Tiger teeth look is my favorite out of all of them. I think I heard in a documentary or read in a book somewhere that Disney helped in some way with the look as well. With all that said, I am definitely fav'ing this!

As usual a great rendering of a great aircraft. Your work is fantastic. My father was in a supply outfit in Burma during 42-43 and actually met General Chennault and lady Chennault during supply runs in and out of the groups bases in southern China. He became friends with Col Robert Scott who was a group leader for the Tigers at the time. Scott later wrote a fantastic book (God is my Co-pilot). My father told me that it was a rough time for them and not any glamour at all. They lived in tents on muddy airfields and slept in slit trenches to avoid the night bombing by the Japanese. Scott and his men used to paint the nose spinners on their aircraft a different color each day to make the Jap's think the Tigers were in China in larger numbers than they actually were. Β

brilliant information mate

I grew up in China and I have to say even today the Flying Tigers are a much honored household name, they are also one of the few things that both the ROC and the PRC respect. After researching much of archival information from the libraries state sideΒ I'm impressed by how much American was willing to help when our own air force was pretty much wiped out.Β

I must say I respect the men who served in the Flying Tigers deeply, when we were slaughtered on a genocidal scaleΒ they were the big damn heroes anyone would love to have. I do hope there are still survivors from the group today, I'd like to shake their hands and say thank you for being our shield and our avengers, if it weren't for them Chong Qing (ChunKing) would have suffered millions of more deaths.

I think it's a travesty that much of the America's fighting men were labelled as racists by the liberal revisionists and the ultranationalists in Japan. Most Americans were heroes who rose to the occasion, even the world weary hicks were infinitely better than an obedient butcher of the Axis. I do hope the arc of history would swing toward the sensible side and we are still able to regard them as the heroes they are without modern biases. The precious context they once...thrived, was in one of my people's most perilous time, and the moment of America's rise to greatness. That same heartbeat uniting two Republics fighting a genocidal foe was truly heroic.Β

God Bless Chennault, and even Vinegar Joe.Β

Thank you again mate.Β

Your story brought tears.
My father fought in the Pacific in WW2.
I am deeply connected to the tradition of America at Her best moments, as you have wonderfully pointed out.
After the assassinations in the 1960's, America was taken over by Wall St and London "Tory" 1%'er's.
My country then became an imperial power, on behalf of the very families and institutions that committed genocide against Asians, Africans, Native Americans, Jews, Muslims, etc., etc.
I am a supporter of American economist and statesman Lyndon LaRouche.
He is leading an international campaign to defeat "The Crown", and to defend the principles of classic Platonic civilization.
Please visit www.larouchepac.com
Also, please communicate to WA. DC., to tell President Trump to dump Steve Mnuchin as Treasury Secretary, adopt the Glass-Steagle legislation, and bring Mr. LaRouche into the administration and follow his wise words.
Donald Trump is no dream. Β But London and Wall St. fear that he will listen to LaRouche, and use the power of the Presidency to defeat the goals of the royals. Β That is the underlying reason why President Trump is under such attack.
And thank you mate!
Jimbo

Sorry for the late reply sir, just saw your post today.Β
Am of the mind that Glass Steagle needed to be reinstated as well, the "royal couple" have royally screwed up USA and allowed decades of Neocon and Neoliberal policies that rotted the greatness of America, not to mention the regressive collectivist identitarians. Jesus I, can't, even, these days. Such follies and cultural suicide. I just (perhaps foolishly) hope things get better.

At least I still love Flying Tigers though- and the Chinese people will as well, - they still remember!
