Actually, I do believe this to be a photograph, noting the dust spot under the 109's left wing (lower wing), and the category it is placed under.
Also, it isn't "technically" a BF-109, but rather a Hispano AviaciΓ³n HA-1112
And yes, I just learned that myself.

It's because they used a RR Merlin engine, like in Hurricanes and early Spitfires, rather than the Daimler-Benz DB605 in German-built examples.
