Description From Cool ape. Lost the most recent file so I had to redo some stuff. Immediatly fixed up a few sketches that didn't work well and added a bonus joke. Thanks to ultra for the suggestions.

Part 2:
A knuckles production: Nothing to do with SATam but little jab at Sonic triple trouble. Hey, it's still 90's Sonic. Can't believe I didn't make this observation back when I did the full Triple trouble parody.

Sonic's solution to problems: I know what you're saying. Roger, the sketch was really boring and predictable. Well yeah, that's the point. That's exactly how it feels to watch these "action scenes" in Season 1. This is a typical cartoon issue, most episodes only have room for one real action scene, at the climax. Every other problem the heroes encounter is just a pointless encounter to set up a commercial cliffhanger.
As a result, they spent a full 1 minute showing us how desperate and scary the situation is , and after the commercial is over, we see the hero deal with the problem in 10 seconds.
You might not notice it when you watch only one episode a week, with the commercials included, but watch several episodes in one sitting without interuptions, and you notice how often we get a "Oh no! A MONSTER!!" sequence, ending with Sonic just shrugging and running off. Sure, running is Sonic's thing, and the strategy always works, so I can't blame him.
But why Robotnik always designs deathtraps that can only be beaten by running really fast really baffles me. I think there's 2 episodes where Robotnik specifically designed a trap that only works when Sonic runs, including a rocketlauncher that always hits Sonic as soon as he runs. Of course he never used it after it worked perfectly for one episode. And now, right up at the big final confrontation in the final episode, Robontik always has traps that Sonic can defeat by running fast. Urghh..
The big epic showdown of Robotnik I've been looking forward since episode 1, and it ends up being a stupid tube where Sonic just runs away from.

Rotor is awesome: He is.

The other freedom fighters: Hey, remember when I said season 1 had great use of red shirts? Well, Season 2 doesn't.
I really HATE the final episode of SAT am. And I'm not referring to the cliffhanger. The whole episode sucks. After building the other freedom fighters like Arie and the wolves up for several episodes, they're immediatly arrested, powerhouse characters like Bunny barely have a cameo, Robotnik's final showdown is laughable, the climax with the powerstone is confusing, not to mention painfull deus ex machina ish. Ghah. But hey, at least there's plenty of WACKY and HILARIOUS Antoine antics. Cause we didn't get enough of that.

Oh no, Swatbots!: Our friends the swatbots again. This one confused me as hell when I was 10 years old. Which was back in season 1, let alone how painfull this trope is in season 2.
One moment we see Sonic destroy 500 swatbots with one lame pun, the next moment they're all " OMG SWATBOTS WE MUST RUN!!!!"
Why? I just saw Sonic destroy 50 swatbots by just holding up a mirror. Do it again! In season 2, Sonic can turn into a giant tornado to take out entire armies of the damn things. And I'm still supposed to be on the edge of my seat if a single Swatbot politely asks Sonic to surrender himself for 10 minutes straight?

I would have to disagree with what you said about the last episode. First with the others getting captured and the showdown with Robotnik. I liked that mostly because it shows that Robotnik has everything planned out and while he overlooked some things and got arrogant he still showed that he was threatening. As for Antoine he had very little screen time and just one moment of being silly and the way you worded that makes it come across as you hate seeing him in general. As for the powerstones they are nowhere close to a deus ex machina that would be something that just comes out of nowhere and saves they day. They sudden three power rings are closer to that then something that has been brought up and even seen earlier in the show. As for the swatbots I just saw them as the biggest flaw of Robotnik and that is his arrogance. Unlike Adventures robots where Robotniks knows they are dumb, but he still has them do important things here he views his robots as perfect and blames Snivley for what goes wrong showing that he puts too much faith in his robots and fails to see a problem with them.

What if Robotnik and his Swatbots were more like Hitler and his Nazi empire, like he was trying to establish anΒ Aryan empire, and the Swatbots just simply tortured brutally any Freedom Fighter they saw?

Hm? That would explain why he's so ineffectual and everyone can just waltz into Hitler's throneroom?

Nah, while I like a dark Robotnik, he always has at least a bit of a clown in him. GOing full angry Hitler is a bit too far.
Altoguh I suppose Sonic SATam pulled it off.
Especially now there's more people associating Sonic with kiddy cartoons again, he needs at least a bit of goofyness.
Like Batman's the joker. Still threatening and an intense villain, but with some sillyness mixed in.

You now know the real reason I'm like this so often. I'm constantly depressed that I'm one of the only partly decent things about this horrendous show. Everyday I was surrounded by annoying canon foreigners who made it look less and less like a show about the Sonic games. I'd down a few Jack Daniels' and cry myself to sleep after each day of filming. Almost 5 years later Sonic Adventure was released and I was so happy, but then the games after it got progressively more depressing. I told myself "God dammit, it's Sonic SatAM all over again.", and wished I owned Archie Comics so that I could fire Ian Flynn.

Interesting, I thought that SATaM was in fact the only incarnation of Sonic where it was really really difficult to fight robots. In anime, he just smashes them with his bare hands (or body), and most of the time even without power up. And in games, the robots are complete joke. They are even designed to be joke. And they are designed to shoot after like 5 seconds delay after spotting Sonic. Not to mentions that the actual projectile is so slow the you can walk away from it.
In SATaM, I have never seen Sonic to destroy a robot by his superhuman strength. I think he did not have such power in these cartoons. Without power-up, all he could do was run fast, but he was avoiding the contact and never actually hit them as far as I remember.
And now you make animation about how easy is to destroy them? I am confused, muaaaaaah!!!

Rogerregorroger In reply to Dracold [2012-11-17 20:00:37 +0000 UTC]

In the first season a little, but in the second season Sonic just plows trough them and can just walk right inside Eggman's office whenever he likes.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dracold In reply to Rogerregorroger [2012-11-17 23:45:19 +0000 UTC]

Maybe, but still it is much harder for him then in other incarnations. In games, when Sonic gets to any Eggman base, it is completely destroyed in 8-12 minutes.
Didn't Sonic destroy the whole Death Egg thingy? Well, if the Sonic equivalent of Starwars Death Star had the same weakness - one shot in the reactor blows it up - than he could easily do it. But still, it is insane difference.
Maybe he grew up a bit between the seasons
But still I must say, that this cartoon is way more serious than anything else "Sonic" while in the same time not focusing on being serious at all.

How would you have written SatAM (the entire series, not just the final episode)?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Rogerregorroger In reply to CoreyAMurray [2012-01-10 17:34:52 +0000 UTC]

Heh, me as main writer? That'd not end well..

Depends on at which part of developing I would come in, I guess.
if i was there from day one, I'd probably not do the whole guerrilla war style stories.
I'd probably be much closer to the AOSTH style.

But if I was main writer after the general idea was already set up, I'd probably model it after the Suikoden series. Which is close to Satam I guess, tough with more traveling and freedom. More focused on characters forming alliances, discovering and explorign weakpoints, gaining allies.
And using all that information and those allies instead of letting them be captured in 3 seconds, like Satam does.
Instead of getting comedy out of comic relief characters, I would instead use more situation based comedy.
Like occasionally switching to a different story genre for an episode.
Like Suikoden which occasionally jumps from the war drama stuff to a sudden "invade Dracula's castle" chapter, or have characters infiltrate a school and be caught up in some sort of detective story in there. While all in context of the main plot.

But meh, I'd probably screw the series up.
Anyway, the concept of Satam is great, I love it.
There's just a lot of execution problems that stumble the series.
Problems probably caused by cartoon censorship or bad communication between writers.
So nothing that I as a writer could have fixed.

SO, what are your favorite movies and cartoons and games? And what do you mean by "ZAZ" stuff?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Rogerregorroger In reply to CoreyAMurray [2012-01-10 21:49:59 +0000 UTC]

ZAZ stands for Zucker Abrahams Zucker.
It''s a trio of film directors that made several crazy parody movies in the late 70's, 80's and early 90's.
From Kentucky Fried Chicken too Airplane! too the Naked Gun series.
After that they kinda fell apart, altough I count Hot Shots! Hot Shots! part deux and Jane Austin's Mafia! as ZAZ movies as well, even tough only Abrahams worked on it, but the movies have the same kind of humor.
I love em.

So my favorite movies are those, and Indiana Jones movies.

As for games, I like Sonic , the Lego (insert movie franchise) series, the Suikoden series, Grandia, Skies of Arcadia, mid 90's Sega/ Namco arcade games, the Yakuza series... And that's the main ones.

As for cartoons, uhh, at the moment mostly Phineas and Ferb, Futurama, the occasional Southpark, Beavis and Butthead. Uh, yeah.

Oh, wait, Sonic SatAM was made by DiC? That explains SO MUCH. Don't know if you've heard of Sailor Moon, but DiC did the dub of it, and its problems (the dubbed version's) are almost exactly the same.

Rogerregorroger In reply to StardustLuna [2011-04-02 14:02:18 +0000 UTC]

Dic couldn't have changed THAT much to Sailormoon, could they?
Since they didn't write or animate it.

Tough I guess they could re-shuffle the footage and still turn it into their own little mutant anime.

Still, Got nothing against DIC. Inspector gadget was great.
