I´m SOO HAPPY I finally managed to finish something for a HARPG event!! Back in action <3<3 it was ages since I made something like this and it´s been fun to revisit what got me started in digital art like...8 years ago~
It wasn´t a painless process though, mid rendering I saved a small version of the image to send to a friend asking how things were progressing then I sorta...forgot to scale the image back to original size(this is why you shouldn´t sit up late at night drawing..brainfart accidents bound to happen) so it ended up losing a lot of detail T_T I also struggled between adding more background elements, riders, the location but found the overall composition getting waay too busy, so decided to keep it clean and simple.

They weren´t nervous, why would they be nervous? This was just a bit of going around in circles and stopping on the marks and really nothing to worry about. During courier runs they HAD to worry, oh yes, worry about cannons going off in their direction, of slippery trenches and stray bullets...So why were his hands shaking gripping the reins? Jesse snarled under his breath, a cloud of smoke escaping into the biting winter air, trying for the umpteenth time to readjust the uncomfortable chin strap. The day had been so much waiting around and now suddenly time was flying, horses going in and out of the arena, voices over the loudspeaker system calling out names and numbers and just like that Jesse was half through his and Grolls program, realizing he should have tightened the stupid strap even more as his helmet slid askew. If riding in the opening number with the hussars had felt like home and right up their alley, this was deep water..deep, dark, stormy waters packaged in a neatly raked sand arena with tidy little fences. How one could fear tiny, white, perfectly lined fences more than barbed wire trenches was almost unreal...but then and there, with the grey war horse tensing up under saddle, ready to burst into a mad man dash like they usually did during their courier runs with urgent messages, Jesse very much would have preferred a bit of sharp spiked metal wired which Groll knew to steer clear of. For every halt, every turn, the stallion chew the bit and snorted, as if asking when he could "go!" already. It wasn´t pretty, the tension making gaits harder than usual, but they got through it with military precision and when the final halt was done and over and they´d left the judges and arena behind Jesse didn´t stop. He steered clear of the other participants, following gravel road straight out into the surrounding woods, and let the stallion stretch his legs properly. Finally, the pent up adrenaline wore off, and with the wind biting the tip of his nose red and the sound of cantering hooves beating frost hardened ground he wondered if not all these dressage riders were slightly bat-shit crazy. They put themselves through this..for FUN!
