Could you please link me to the brushes you used for the grass?

Sure!
I used a grass brush that came with the plug-in/add-on (orwhateveritis) Gimp Paint Studio (GPS) [link]
Just click on the one that says: "GPS 1_5_final release.zip"
If you need any help from there, just ask! :3

How do I get to use them as brushes, not as BGs?

Thanks, Taiyenne! Yes, there's two hills.
Thanks so much for helping, I have to admit I was a little lazy with the grass/ground.

Nice! Suggestion: Try lining the outline closest to the light source with a bright color like light yellow or white, but on a different layer. Then select it and use the gradient tool with transparency and the color you outlines, and use that on it to create a greater effect of lighting.
