Personally I like the second the best, although each one would drastically change the style of the game. The second to last one is pretty good as well, and the third one is somewhat charming in it's own way. The character concept is solid, but the gameplay and setting would be a better dictation of style then a lone sprite.

Thanks for your thoughts! Would you care to elaborate further on what you like / dont like about the characters, or what you feel when looking at them? Especially for #2 since that was your preference.

I agree that the gameplay and setting should often dictate a style, but that's why these were chosen to explore, because our setup could accommodate really anything in the serious-cute-silly spectrum, and art has been tasked with picking a direction

Sure thing. Number two has the most personality/style in my opinion. The character has a good silhouette and is fairly unique compared to common game characters. It also seems to have the best potential for interesting animations given the size and lack of outlines (along with #1). However, #1 and #4 seem more serious while the others give off a more cartoony vibe which I find more appealing. Serious pixel art can be done, but it's a lot harder to pull off, especially when factoring in all other elements in a project. #3 has that "Risk of Rain" look while the last two are more JRPG in style. All cute and interesting enough on their own, but not necessarily unique.
