Description These saber-toothed predators lived in the Late Eocene - Early Miocene of North America and, possibly, Asia. With a longer than in cats muzzle and broad semi-plantigrade limbs (on the hind limbs remained five fingers) Eusmilus resembled rather large saber-toothed fossa (Cryptoprocta ferox), than most of those cats with whom they associate, and is often compared. Eusmilus - animals are relatively small size, mostly about the size of a small leopard, although there are some finds of E. dacotensis, which reached the size of large leopards. But in general, despite the small size of these predators, their long canine teeth suggest that they may hunt prey larger than his size.

Why wouldn’t the teeth go inside pockets formed by that lower jaw extension?

Well, the way it is - used photo of fossa. In fact, the head of a fossa stretched on the Eusmilus's skull.
