Lol, friend safaris let you catch Pokemon with their hidden abilities, they do NOT affect the shinies...

There are however other things that help you out in X/Y, like tips which are confirmed to modify the shiny encounter rate.

*waggles finger* Not what I heard, pal. To my understanding, shinies are just SLIGHTLY more likely to appear within the Friend Safari. I don't think it's much of an increase, but given how many people have encountered shinies there - including yours truly - I have some belief in it.

Not the first time nor the last I heard someone say how something "slighty" increases shiny encounters |D
I have been prowling around Friend Safaris in search of Pokemon with hidden abilities for hours, and have not found a single shiny, yet I have already bred 2 by using the Masuda Method+giving tips.

And not to sound rude or mean, but considering "how many people" have caught Misdreavus and Milotic in Friend Safaris (as in, many claimed to do so, yet these are proven to be unobtainable in FSs), so I am not too trusting to such claims.
But oh well, if you trust it works, feel free to do so

Trust it works? Heh, no I don't really trust such "randomness" ... I may gamble with it, but trust is a whole other issue.

I much prefer the Masuda Method - because I know what I'm getting. It may take awhile, but it pays off - my gallery proves that.

I just feel convinced that the shiny rate was adjusted there. Not by much, mind you... but I do believe it. Do I consider it reliable though? Nah... Masuda Method is - imo - still the best way to get shinies. (save for the Pokemon that can't breed of course)

I personally use the Mesuda method to obtain most of my shinies.

dumb question is dumb, but a pokemon holding an item would not effect the chances would it cuz i was having a parent hold an Everstone. ._.;

Nope, held items do nothing to affect your odds at obtaining a shiny Pokemon.

1. Friend Safaris do not affect shinies, the odds are the same no matter where you seek 'em |D (these do however let you catch Pokemon with hidden abilities).

2. Tips on the other hand are officially proven to increase the odds to find/hatch one.

3. If you want a shiny starter, give some tips to people, then try the Masuda Method. I can prove it works fine, since I got my shiny Chespin that way >3

OK, I stand corrected, I just found a Shiny Xatu in an FS, and I checked around that indeed Friend Safaris are supposed to increase the shiny encounter rate (from 2 to 5 times), so it seems my info was a little outdated |D

It's not yet clear what affects the rate (as in, why certain FSs have a 2-3 times greater chance, while others have 4-5 times bigger), but it has been proven I guess |3
But still, the tips are also confirmed, so it's best that you combo these >3 (more so since tips boost chances for both the Masuda Method and Friend Safaris).

One other thing you can use is any Pokemon with the Illuminate ability, the description only mentions that it hightens Pokemon encounter when a Pokemon with this ability is in front of your party, however, it also raises the likelihood of finding a shiny in the wild. So a combo of Friend Safari+tips+Illuminate could be a huge booster in shiny hunting ^^

The Pokemon which have this ability are - Staryu, Starmie, Chinchou, Lanturn, Volbeat & Watchog. Good luck ^^

Nope, I'm afraid Masuda Method+tipping is the only was for breeding, the Illuminate ability only works for wilds.
