you're welcome. although it makes a prettier shot sometimes, something just doesn't feel right about it, like cheating...

Must be the sky's revenge. Howcome it's so cold?
Reminds me of Joe Btsflk. Remember him?

My Dad always says you can't count on the cold being over until sometime after 15 April which it now is but he never rules out cold until the end of April. He's warned me in the past not to plant anything frost sensitive until late April. I think it's a nice change from the early summers we've been having! Whose Joe Btsflk?

It is nice when we don't have so doggone much hot weather, but they're warned us that we will have lots of hot droughts. I hope they're all wet!
Joe Btsflk was a character in Lil Abner. He always went around with a raincloud over his head, raining on him. When I read some cult literature, I feel like him. I tell people so.

OK, now I know who he is. I don't know about drought. We almost always have heavy rains in Feb regardless of weather conditions but none this year but rain in March and April are really off pattern for us. I just don't know if I believe them. Besides, what happened to the El Nino winter? I didn't notice that much flooding here, did you?

El Nino fizzled this year. And we haven't had decent rains in Feb for a good many years recently. The only decent year I can remember for decent winter rains for quite awhile was 2005. I took as many trips to photograph wildflowers as I could, and got some good shots.

No, the ladyfinger was already growing in the little island half circle at the horse barn driveway. It's in the center by the fence and the 3 baby native mesquites are to the dirveway side so you probably never noticed it although it takes up most of the center to the fence.
No, it is a bloom stalk, not pups. They are most definitely flowers. I will loose that agave as the stalk was already well up before I noticed it. If I can catch them just coming up, I can cut them off and save the plant but, it's too late for this one but there are lots of pups at the base.
Maybe I will load a not so clear photo of the tiny olive blooms into Scraps. I never did get a good one but they were only there a short time that I could pay attention to them. Mostly, I think they were blooming when I was too busy to notice.

That's entirely possible, that I didn't notice. And it's been awhile since I was there (and for all I know, those plants grew since I was last there).
You're lucky you have pups at the base. Mine bloomed last summer, and it didn't have any. It got a stalk, but it has tiny plants on it. At least that's sure what it looks like, and I think I read that's what they do. Or maybe they can do one of two things.
All too often, things bloom or do whatever when you're too busy to notice. It's been several years since I had cactus fruit, because I just get too doggone busy! Oh, and I love nopalitos, too, but the only year we harvested any was when I went with a friend to her old house and harvested pads there.

Agaves only bloom once and then die. The stalk is most assuredly a flower stalk and contains no baby plants but seeds once the flowers have died.

Some agaves only bloom once. What matters is whether the stalk is a terminal stalk, or a lateral stalk. If a lateral stalk, they will bloom repeatedly. I spent quite awhile with the work of the acknowledged agave expert, Howard Scott Gentry. I'm still wondering about whether the octopus may sometimes produce flowers, and sometimes baby plants. I will dig out my copy of Gentry when I have time, but given the shambles our book collection is in, don't hold your breath!

Neither my common agave or the octopus have ever produced what you are calling a lateral stalk. All have been blossom stalks and all were obviously flowers when they opened. To date, that has been 3 each.

The octopus obviously has a terminal stalk. So do the Agave americana. My octopus bloomed last year, and it's deader'n a doornail.

Yeah. I don't have any pups of the octopus, but I still have the plants you gave me a long time ago. None of them has bloomed yet. And there are quite a few pups.
