Wow! For a first time this is seriously amazing! You clearly understand faces very well, and charcoal can be a tricky (but really fun) medium. I know that feeling when you start something and it feels as if your hand just goes on walk about and you're just along for the ride, freaky and weird XD. But seriously for a first time just epic!
I would suggest though thinking more clearly where the light is coming from, right now it feels the face has been 'spot-lighted' and the hair is left in the dark, so to speak. Though the hair is just amazing in itself, (must have taken you forever O_O) As stated before you do have a good feel for faces, however the eye does feel a little weird for me. Due to the strange shading, it feels as if it's 'popping' and positioned a little oddly. I think it could have been dropped just a bit and given more detail, as the rest of the drawing is so well done and the eye feels a little lack luster. Then finally the neck, the same way you shaded the top lip needs to be consistent, again the rest feels very well defined and rounded, and the neck feels a little rushed and not so well finished.Β
But still for a first time this is amazing! My first time with charcoal I blotched more than actually drew XD I think you have amazing talent, and I hope you do more of these in the future, you certainly seem to have a knack for it.
Great job!

Thank you so much for your feedback !! As using for the first time th charcoal, I draw with it but I find difficulties to put the light on some parts like the hair. I must practice more on lightening. I love drawing hair !! ^^ I love also drawing eyes but in this picture they aren't as beautiful as I do them in general because I usually don't draw potraits. I hate drawing portraits and most of all myself (I don't look at the glass in general ^^' ). But that day, I have that need to do it. So I photographed myself and when drawing, I found the eyes in the photo not well detailed (for exemple the eyelashes aren't highlighted.) And on the photo, I wasn't smiling, so...
As I said, I pratically don't draw portraits because on the one hand I never have a perfect ressemblance with the original and on the other, I don't feel that comfortable. I even sometimes doubt if doing portraits is really art or not. The artist need to imagine, create, interprete, play with colors and textures and why not, with "art rules". While doing portraits, you are like limited, obsessed with having a perfect result. Sometimes, random and freedom in drawing can give you extraordinary and unique results. And what a terrible feeling when you give the portrait to the person and you have in return :"It does not resemble me, but good work anyway." And the portrait is then put in the hands of th entourage, having the same comments... A piece of art is supposed to attract the watcher's eye to let him thinking and trying to understand the artist's reasons and its interior, to let him dreaming and having pleasure while looking at the picture... That's my own point of view...
Thank you so much again for your comment !! Really really appreciated !!

Lo,l NP! ^^
It's definitely art, at the end of the day art is as much about interpretation and imagination as it is about skill. The brushstrokes, detailing and finer work is part of what makes the piece great. Some people are just good at details, seeing the form of the eye, the movement of the jaw and capturing it in his or her stroke or line. Life-studies and animal studies are prime examples of this, where the artist sits and draws what he sees. Others, like impressionists draw also what they see but try to bring in the feel and atmosphere as well, where as the more realistic artist simply brings in the details and graphical appeal.
So yes, portraits are art, especially since some artist are brilliant at it and others can't seem to do it all, and the more fine and precise your work, the better it is
I mean would you say the Mona Lisa, Girl with the Pearl earring or Goya's self portrait, isn't art? What makes those pieces great is their technique and skill, not the imagination

That's just silly :\ Impressionists were scorned for the exact same reason. When they shared their paintings people scoffed and said it wasn't 'real art' because it didn't really capture all the detail, adn was more 'blotches of paint' than art. Ironically their pieces actually revolutionized art and opened the door for many different interpretations and other styles.
'Art-snobs' are damned annoying -_-
And again NP, I love your piece and I love debates XD

I really like the texture the charcoal gives this piece. I would suggest you darken the shadow underneath the nose a bit more. And since you have the lightening directly in front of him, the hair on the right side should get darker as it goes back away from the light. Also the eyes feel a little dead to me. I think adding some eyelashes and maybe getting a white gel pen to add more of a highlight would help, but that's just me. I really do love the hair and how it flows so naturally, it really feels alive. Great job!

I'm fine, thank you !! ^^ Sometimes there are moments when we ask ourselves questions and some gloom invades us so I express it through drawing to deliver from and maybe to find some answers or verities.
Thank you for asking me that !! ^^

Ah! Now, you know I have a preference for black and white but I love this one! You have a depth of shadows here that you doubt have in your other pieces and I find that really beautiful. While I'm sorry there is melancholy, this end product has soul.
One thing I notice across all your pieces, but is more evident in charcoal, is that your light sources aren't always well defined. In this one, the hair would benefit from development in that region, especially. Overall, this is a really stunning first attempt at charcoal!!!

It's very ephemeral, kind of androgynous and fluid.you can see Β the Β lost quality of the process in the details. Very good expressionΒ

Not at all, I mean that it leaves room for the viewer to empathize and to reach pretty much anyone that sees it in some way. I like it very much.

Free drawing without really honing in on it really helps ease the melancholy, doesn't it?Β
I say this because I often stress out even more if I find the details aren't perfect enough.
Either way, FABULOUS job with the hair! The lighting, shading, and direction with each individual strand is perfect.

First of all, thank you so much for your comment !! I'm very grateful !!
That day, I was really sad. And when a strong but hurtful feeling like that accumulates in every part of you, you want to stand out, get rid of it and put you in another form, more beautiful and pleasant for my heart and for the eyes in general. And without thinking, you let yourself doing the job. What is more ironic in this, it's that I don't draw portraits in general and especially myself (I hate drawing myself. ^^' ) So... It's new... And I sincerely didn't stress a bit when drawing it. On the contrary, I enjoyed drawing it and I didn't care about the processing and the result. It was like a discussion between me and myself. The body talks to the soul. Every of them expresses what is suffering from. Every of them agrees and finds that they have points in commun... It was like a fusion, something I can't really explain... And when finished it, I woke up from being occupied by drawing, and it was like contemplaining all what I lived, sensed, suffered, cried... My own story in front of my eyes... I was like released from it... And revived. (But I know it will be no longer, and I will start a new drawing to try to release from that feeling again)
Thank you once more for your comment !!
