"Speak not Leonardo, for it is, that I wish no one to hear you." -Karai

This pic isn't an original idea; I decided to draw it after seeing the cover to issue #57 of the orig. Mirage comic series. Here's the Issue 57 cover if you want to see it yourself. (I've provided a summary of the events behind the cover at the bottom.)

Anyway, here, Karai has finally decided to stop hiding the fact that she cares about Leo's well being. Further deciding that his ninja lifestyle is far too dangerous, she has taken him captive in a slightly bizarre attempt to keep him out of harm's way. As you might expect, Karai's actions didn't sit well with Leo's family. Infiltrating the Foot compound, Donnie, Raph and Mikey head for Karai's panic room where she is currently guarding Leo.
Anticipating that it won't take long for Leo's family to break into the room, Karai takes Leo's own ninjaken (katanas) and holds them at the ready, the sharp edges outward to show that she is ready to fight, but also close enough to her "pet" to keep him from trying anything.

"Karai, please, DON'T." breathes Leo, aware that his captor is trembling with tension.
"They will NOT take you from me Leonardo." hisses Karai, "They do not understand!"
"I'm not even sure I do." mumbles the turtle. The banging on the door to the panic room continues.
"You have to let me go." says Leo, feeling the cold steel of his blades coming nearer to his throat.

"I cannot." responds Karai, "You mean a great deal to me. You always have."
"I know..." sighs Leonardo, "You've meant--"
The door to the room suddenly buckles and hits the floor as three mutant turtles rush in.
"NO." sounds Karai, suddenly throwing Leo down onto his side. Landing her bent knee against the side his neck, she pulls out an aikuchi, placing the small blade's tip against Leo's soft side. His brothers freeze - only a yard way.
"Leave now!" commands Karai, "Or you will be taking a corpse back with you!"

"Yo! Crazy Karai!" barks Raphael, "If you meant to kill 'im, why haven't you already done it?!"
"Yeah?!" rallys Michelangelo, "If you really wanted our brother dead, he would be!"
Karai blinks, trying to think of something to say. Then, quietly, Leo's unwavering voice enters her ears.

"Karai. You told me you made me your prisoner to keep me safe. If you're now about to open my side, haven't you then defeated that purpose? Won't you be defeating yourself?"
Karai takes her eyes from the three turtlemen before her, and looks down at Leo peering up at her through the corner of his eye.
At once Karai is flung back against the wall, the air knocked from her lungs. Following Raphael's attack, Donatello leaps over his fettered brother, facing the winded Karai, while Raph and Mikey sever the ropes binding their eldest brother.

"No..." mewls Karai, more defeated by Leo's words then by the blows from his siblings.
Leonardo rises to his feet, and the four turtles face the Shredder's adopted daughter. "Come on!" says Raph, "Let's go!"
They head for the exit.

With a wail like a banshee, Karai screams Leonardo's name. The turtle in blue stops, and to everyone's surprise he turns back. He pauses for but a moment before walking right up to the tearful Karai, and kneels.
"What're ya--?" begins Raph, but Donnie stops him.
"Karai," says Leo, in a low tone, "Suffice it to say, that which you feel for me, I also feel for you. The only difference is," and here he looks straight into her eyes, "I wouldn't have taken away your freedom."
Karai can only watch then, teeth gritted and fists clenched as Leo rises and leaves with his brothers.

Summary of Issues 56/57 (as they relate to the cover)
I bought the comics just to find out what the cover with Leo and Karai was all about. Turns out, Karai needs the turtles. She has her Foot attack the water-tower where they're staying, but when the fight starts to get out of hand, Karai orders her fighters back and sends in the taser squad. They actually get Leo while Mikey, Raph and Donnie make an expedient escape (Mikey hates leaving Leo, but his brothers make him). Later, Karai arrives at the warehouse where she's holding Leo. She tells the men outside not to hinder the other turtles if they should arrive.
She then enters, asking her guards if Leo is conscious. They reply (and I quote): "Yes, Karai-san. And therefore very dangerous -- even when bound. Shouldn't we just ... kill it?"
Karai orders them out before walking over to where Leo's swords have been propped. She takes one of the blades in hand and compliments the craftsmanship. She then turns to Leo, raising the blade over her head to strike...
