National georgraohic in an old issue reported on unusually tame kangaroo rats in the wild. An abundance of food and lack of predators had made them trusting. They were tamer than some of MY house mice,esp. if one held out food to one.
There were also pocket mice and if a kangaroo rat saw one, he'd kick it !

If my memory hasn't played me false, kangaroo rats are bold, esp. when their numbers are high. In an early NatGeo the author recalled them teaming around his camp site, along with pocket mice. The bad bold kangaroo rats would oft fight by kicking with their hind feet, and were not at all afraid of the man. He could pick up a kangy and dangle it by the tail and put it down and it;ll stay in the area and forage.
One got particularly friendly, would perch on his hand for tidbits and, use its elevated position to scan for pocket mice to kick around. A kangy rat would kick back if kicked, but a pocket mouse would run off yelping. After hopping off his hand to kick a mouse, it would hop back on ! Only one of my domestic mice was anywhere that friendly.

I LOVE KANGAROO RATS!!! I want one as a pet...seriously I do! They're one of my favorite animals! Thy eye is awesome! So adorable!
